In that case, makes total sense.

What about the interpositives?

Has anyone found any Easter eggs on the set yet? I did a Google search but the only thing that kept coming up was the Boba Fett cartoon (which I don't think really counts, because it wasn't exactly hidden lol).

I'm sure they're out there; the pre-SE video transfers had to come from something (and that being the negative would be pretty unlikely). Probably wouldn't be the ideal picture quality SW fans might hope for.

The interpositives should be of better quality than the Technicolor prints, no?

Anyway, my point is that if the studio wants to release these films they'll release them without much trouble. And releasing these three films won't cost more than releasing any other film.

The thing is even if the original negatives were destroyed during the creation of the Special Editions, they're would still be interpositives and other prints out there which are a few generations removed.

Seeing as an actual print of the Theatrical Cut of A New Hope does exist, I'm willing to bet that there are prints out there for the other 2 films, probably in the hands of private collectors.

I'm wondering if anybody has actually tried to contact Disney since the acquisition last year to find out what their plans are for the OOT.

Default Price drops for the old Trilogy sets?

Now that new lower-priced trilogy sets are coming out in October, should we see the old sets drop much in price? Maybe in a Black Friday dump? I'd buy the old ones (or the new ones) if they hit the magic price of $19.99.

I would only re-purchase these if they were new transfers - even if the current special edition versions. I don't think the existing transfers are bad; in fact, they look pretty pretty decent much of the time (aside from occasional edge enhancement, frozen grain, and weird skin tones at times), but they are not up to the level of (filmic) quality as the Indy movies, Jaws, E.T., Alien, Terminator, Blade Runner, etc. and many other classics and that is a shame.

Those transfers are coming up on 10 years old. They weren't exactly state of the art at the time - having been rushed through because Lucas was knee-deep in post on Sith - and things have moved on a fair bit since then. They look extremely processed and artificial to me (they always have).

If Lucasfilm (via Disney) and Fox had any sense they'd be prepping a release of the original originals with movie cash inside it, ready for Ep VII. And I still want the 3D versions of the prequels, dammit!

Which would have to look better than what Lucas released in 2006, standard def non-anamorphic transfers made for laserdisc.

Yeah, they do take on that type of look.

Does Fox still have rights to A New Hope? I remember reading at the time of Episode 1 that they gave those rights back to Lucas so he would release the prequels through them. Lucas was going to go with Paramount for the prequels until Fox sweetened their offer with that. If this is the case then Disney would now own rights to all six films.

I also thought that this had happened.

Yes. Disney has all six. I and others have explained this several times over the course of this thread. Lucas got A New Hope back as part of the distribution deal for the prequels. It was Warner Brothers, not Paramount, I believe that almost got the prequels...don't remember exactly.

I'm sure Disney will invest in re-scanning the originals for future releases, maybe not for this or next year. The fact that they just purchased the franchise means they should take care of it, and doing a re-scan/restoration is a must, as a part of the investment.

Thanks for confirming, that is great news. The chance of the original cuts seeing the light of day are there with Disney in charge instead of Lucas, even if that chance is small.

Disney has the films, yes, but what about the existing video distribution rights? Fox aren't just gonna roll over and play dead, and I doubt that Disney are gonna wait it out (did someone mention 2020?) just so they can release something entirely in-house. Anything that comes out between now and then, Disney will have to either suck it up and play ball with Fox, Disney acting purely as the content provider as LFL has always done, or buy out Fox's deal which will cost a lot of moolah.

I'd like to think the chances of Disney restoring the films are better than they were under Lucasfilm, but it's not like Disney has a particularly great track record of preserving their own classics.
