DD - 640kbps
DTS - 1.524Mbps

Both of which sound the same.
thanks, the sound has been fine. All the major action movies I do watch upstairs on a lossless 7.1 setup. Just making sure my basement viewing is as good as possible. Thanks again

I currently have a system capable of only lossy codec playback, and I could not tell you if it was DD or DTS playing (when set to the same volume) don't mistake louder for better. Transformers DOTM has one of the best audio tracks available. When playing back the 7.1 TrueHD track, outputting audio over S/PDIF the hidden DD track is superb. It actually sounds better than the 5.1 DD track which is selectable. Maybe they were mixed separately, i.e. the TrueHD plus hidden track compared to the separate DD track.

My goodness. Are we really going back to that ancient argument?

DTS doesn't do a better job. It's just a data compression codec. It's unlikely you (or anyone) could tell the difference between DD 5.1 and DTS on DVD in a blind test. It's even less likely with the higher bitrate lossy outputs from lossless sources on Blu-ray. Punctuation helps with written communication longer than tweets or texts, btw.

Your receiver processes the sound with either setting. The most the PS3 can ever do is decode the track, which is nothing more than unzipping it to produce PCM, the exact same PCM the receiver will produce if it does the decoding. Processing such as bass management and room correction happens in the receiver no matter where the decoding is done.

(This assumes you are using an HDMI connection. With optical, use bitstream because of limitations with the S/PDIF protocol.)

The one advantage to player decoding is the ability to add in secondary audio such as menu sound effects. Many people use bitstream because their receiver displays can show what codec is being played. But, the sound is no different either way.

btw, bitstream means the receiver does the decoding while the PCM setting means it's being done by the player.

Default Am I getting DTS 5.1

I can't create new thread as new member, so I apologize for posting here.

I'm setting up a brand new Sony STR-DN1030 and it has been frustrating, to say the least. Blu-ray player is a Sony BDP-BX57 and when playing "Game of Thrones", display in this unit says "DTS 5.1". In the AVR it says LPCM [48]" . My question is "Am I getting 5.1 sound". I have tried many, many settings on both units with same result. My old receiver had a big Blue light when receiving a 5.1 signal.

Help. Thanks.

If you want your receiver to decode - set your BDP-BX57 to bitstream. From what you are describing - the player is doing the decoding and outputing LPCM at 48khz (see how many channels are lit up on the left display on your system) if you have 6 speakers (L,C,R, surrounds, and SW) lit, your getting 5.1...in your case it lookes like you are getting DTS 5.1 (lossy core?). Set your BD player to bitstream so the receiver can decode.

SOLVED. With the help of JChin from AVS forum.
BDP-BX57 set to bitstream with this setting: Audio(HDMI)=Auto ; BD Audio Mix Setting=OFF . Now the AVR is displaying "DTS-HD MSTR" .

I would never have figured this out. Thanks to all.

Default Bluray says 5.1, receiver says LPCM

When I stream a video from Amazon Prime it says that it is 5.1 but my receiver says LPCM. BD is set to off. Do I need to set another thing on the bluray player?
My blurays play without a problem. Its only the Amazon which does this. I use a chromecast for Netflix with no problem with 5.1 being that it is connected direct to the USB port on the rear of my Sony 1020 receiver. Would appreciate any help with this.

There's no difference in the sound so why are you concerned about it?

How are you playing the Amazon stuff? What device is connected to Amazon and how does it hook to your audio system?

Why would any user with a 5.1 or 7.1 HT ever want to set the Blu-ray player to PCM rather than bitstream??

The only reason is if the AVR is HDMI 1.1 or (short lived) 1.2.

Default "Affordable" Home Theater receiver and speakers with POWERED sub for guest bedroom

I enjoy electronics. Computers, video games, home audio... the usual.

I have a 60" Samsung 1080p TV in my front room. It's probably 5 years old now, but it has a great picture, and I paired it with a Marantz SR5006 and small BA speakers that came with their own mounting brackets. Nice setup for Home Theater or gaming (in what was meant to be a dining room).

The setup in my guest bedroom started as a 24" Sony 3D LCD, my PS4 (not slim or Pro), and a Playmates "racing seat" setup bought from Amazon... 10 years ago on a special? Had to upgrade from a Logitech G25 to a G29 so I could use it with the PS4, and since I set it up I've played nothing but F1 2017 which has been amazing. Everything but Monaco hasn't felt TOO difficult, and BOY do I feel like I accomplished something when I figure out the right tires and car config, and do well on the track.

Okay sorry... back on track. Get it?

So the Sony LCD was only $100, they were known to have issues, and when it died I got a 40" Samsung 4K... the MU6290, off Walmart's website for $253 shipped. I realized it doesn't have the backlighting of better 4K sets, but money is tight (has been for a while) and so ANY purchases have to be "affordable" (aka cheap). I used the TV speakers for a few months, but the sound just isn't there for movies, and since getting an older leather recliner from family, I've been using that room more and more.

I'm getting to the point, I swear.

So the last couple days I'm trying to get the 40" 4K to work with my Xbox One S, my PS4, and the Smart apps, going HDMI from both game systems to the TV, and optical to a set of Logitech z-680 speakers. They can handle DD and DTS, and are THX certified for whatever you believe that's worth.

I do bitstream from the game systems to the TV, and then PCM (cause that's the only way it worked) to the speakers. Only the TV makes me choose DD or DTS, and I've found depending on the source and it's audio... that causes issues. Not to mention the Netflix app on my smart TV never seemed to do anything BUT stereo, which is odd when the Xbox and PS4 apps at least seem to do digital.

I came to the realization yesterday that soundbars (including Sonos ones) won't decode audio. Even their new Beam doesn't decode audio sent to it. So I probably need a receiver and speakers.

Again, price is a MAJOR if not the ENTIRE factor here. So I thinking of Onkyo for the receiver. A buddy has had MANY of them, they seem to be well reviewed, and their prices are never as high as Marantz or other "high end" units. Speakers... for better or worse, I'm thinking of using some extra Logitech z906's I have easy access to initially, and if I can find something I can afford down the road I'll upgrade when I can. But unlike the receiver, there are SO many speaker options, I'm totally lost there.

In the end, I'd like to run Bitstream to my receiver, let the better hardware those use decide on what formats to use, and make all my sound better through the system without having to use Settings menus on the TV and changing settings in there all the time.

If you made it to the end, sorry for the length of the post.
