Same with Star Wars but once the original hit, he was pretty much done - fans liked them so really he didn't need to do a ton more development. Even if he had totally messed up Empire, people would have come back for Jedi just based off of the love of that first movie. Look how many people went to see Phantom Menace after complaining about the Special Editions, Clones after Phantom Menace...
I know that they didn't just get an order for 178 episodes (though it did help that it wasn't a network show) but that sort of run helped to cement the TNG crew as Trek legends. Yeah, the original Star Wars showed that if you get it right then it can work within the space of one or two movies, but if you balls it up then you're on a hiding to nothing.

How do you guys feel about Jar Jar Abrams giving Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter a starring role in Episode 7?

Director J.J. Abrams has reportedly met with "everyone" in Hollywood for casting his forthcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, and now we can add a couple of well-known genre faces to the growing list.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams has met with X-Men star Michael Fassbender for an unspecified role, while Lord of the Rings and Matrix veteran Hugo Weaving is in the mix to play "an Imperial commander."

Another actor Abrams is said to be interested in for an unspecified role is Girls cast member Adam Driver, who was most recently linked with the role of Nightwing in Batman vs. Superman.

Even more interesting is the claim that "Abrams and Lucasfilm are now searching for a 20-something female actress who is either of mixed race or black. The rumor is that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a daughter or granddaughter."

And from the sounds of it, there's been quite a bit of behind the scenes drama on Episode VII that led to Oscar-winning screenwriter Michael Arndt parting ways with the project last fall. Even the counsel of former Lucasfilm boss George Lucas was said to have been sought. From THR:

"Arndt is said to have focused on the offspring of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), with the original trilogy heroes taking on supporting roles. Abrams, however, wanted Episode VII to focus on the classic trio of characters, so audiences could have one more chance to enjoy them before a fitting send-off. The new characters, the offspring, will now be in supporting roles, according to these sources, and take center stage in Episode VIII and IX. Some characters have disappeared from the Arndt script and new ones are being drafted.

So with Abrams and Kasdan now overhauling the script, that means many of the actors who had met and auditioned have been nixed for various reasons. For example, one actor who met with Abrams in the fall before the overhaul was Mud breakout star Tye Sheridan. But sources say that at this stage, there is no need for such young actors and thus Sheridan will not be involved. In another case, one part that was initially conceived as a 20-year old male is now being rewritten to be a 40-year old."

The 40-year-old character is one we've heard about before when rumors spread that Abrams and Co. wanted a Matt Damon in Elysium-type. Could that be the role that Fassbender, 36, is said to have met with Abrams about in December?

I would almost guarantee that they will. Disney still has 4 Billion on the table(and counting) and hasn't recouped a dime yet. Obviously I'm not part of the Disney braintrust, but it doesn't take a genius to know 4 Billion is 4 Billion.
Let assume the theatrical release breaks every box office record known to man, I think that would only get them 3 Billion back. Still out quite a bit of dough.
I would expect these to be release on home video ASAP. Then a nice 9 film boxed set to really make some money.

The only way for that to happen is if they make a deal with Fox...

Fox has already made billions of of Star Wars so I would refuse to license the first film just to be a dick. It is Disney after all.

No, the Jesus analogy doesn't hold up because Anakin was no Jesus unless you believe that the Jedi were the villains of the piece and Anakin was the hero. In that case, Obi-Wan would be Judas and Yoda would be Pontius Pilate.

What could be considered is that Anakin was meant to represent the anti-Chirst until the end when he is, in essence, welcomed back into heaven after his death. I suppose Palpatine could be considered to be the Devil, although the Devil was a fallen angel thrown out of heaven and I don't think we could ever consider Palpatine to have been in heaven.

Which gives me an idea (and I haven't read any of the Star Wars books, so I have almost no idea what happens in them) which I'll express even though I frequently hate it when other people do it, since the ideas (like mine, probably) are almost always terrible:

What if 300 years after the events in Star Wars VI, a new religion evolves around the worship of Anakin/Vader, just as it did around Christ by that time after his death. Padme would be the equivalent of Mary Magdalene. Of course, this new "Vaderism" religion gets the actual events all wrong, but it eventually causes the equivalent of the Crusades in the Galaxy and the resulting (star) wars. In fact, maybe the religion splits into "Vaderism" and "Skywalkerism" based on the worship of the different aspects of his character. And maybe there's also a "Dark Ages" until the return of a new Jedi order which leads to an age of enlightenment and a renaissance.

That would be ridiculous and seems like a lame desire to strongly connect the new sequels to the OT. In order for this to work, they would have to make the case that Obi-Wan also (in addition to Anakin) broke the rules of the Jedi order. The only case they could make is that between episodes III and IV, Kenobi no longer considered himself part of the Jedi Order and he took a wife and sired a child.

Or, that Yoda changed the rules because there were no Jedi left at the end of III and they had to "make more" (which is why many religions prohibit the use of birth control), but if that's the case, then why would the wife, daughter or granddaughter never be mentioned in Episode IV? Unless it was a one night stand or unless they left Kenobi because they couldn't live with his "religion".

It would make more sense if the female was a niece or grandniece who was "strong in the Force" because she had much of the same DNA (or midi-chlorian levels) as Kenobi. Or, between Episode III and IV, while he was waiting for Luke to grow up, he took on a disciple whose daughter or grand-daughter is this person and is "strong in the Force". But it would mean that the disciple did not make it to the time of Episode IV (unless on a mission to a far-away planet) unless Kenobi blew it again and got that person killed after they themselves conceived a child. But that would mean that Kenobi would once again have to find a place for an orphaned child. Is he the "Kenobi Adoption Agency"?

So I think they need to be careful. They need to keep the logic of the original six films intact (even if Lucas himself blew some of that). Unless they're going to plot some lame timeline changing, the crutch of bad writers.

I think it would be funnier if Yoda had a secret kid somewhere. Did he never get laid in 900 years of existence? Maybe the kid has dyslexia and speaks normally.

The casting call for a mixed race or black actress would make more sense as the daughter of Lando. You know Lando being the smooth scoundrel that he is might have kids all over the galaxy.

Agreed! Plus they could (if the still exist) release the original cuts of the films as well.

I did not mean an exact rip off of the bible, that is thinking way too far into it lol. I just meant it is a bare bones "hey he is in a prophecy to save the force so he can have no dad like Jesus and I don't have to think too much to write it" kind of idea.

Like I said before, Lucas did not put thought into these. Most of AnH was just a rip off of Hells Angels. Not to mention Lucas did not even know that he would be making more than one Star Ward until it made tons of money.

He wrote the story for attack of the clones after ep 1 was released as you can see in the special features lol. It was a very manufactured conveyer line type series as sad as that makes us feel... Not a lot of heart or thought was involved.

Did they not have birth control or even gynecologists in the Star Wars universe?
If you are in a secret marriage that no one can know about wouldn't you try to not get pregnant? And if you were having nightmares about your pregnant wife dying in childbirth wouldn't you maybe go see a doctor?

Hopefully you would not go to the same medical droid who diagnoses patients with dying of a broken heart.

That would make sense. Let's just not have something as ridiculous as in Jurassic Park 2 with Jeff Goldblum's daughter.
