How about changing the 176. 4 setting to stereo when listening to a CD on the PS3? I really am not a fan of changing settings and as I mentioned earlier having to change the 176.4 setting again when listening to a SACD is just a bit of trouble for a lazy dude like me that is just trying to learn the optimal settings.

I'm a bit biased as I see 176.4kHz stereo as optimal... Would you like to hear music out of all your speakers? If so, the solutions put out by Crackinhedz and neckedness are your options (for non-SACD).

Give a read to the PS3 SACD FAQ. See if this helps at all. I've linked to a connection question and further down is a settings suggestion. I'd love to try and help you out on this one, but I don't have any SACD's and therefore no experience with them (that'll be changing soon though)

I would imagine that is the optimal setting as well. I am not particularly interested in getting sound out of all the speakers rather just wondering when playing a regular CD what the best settings may be and how to get there. Are all CDs going to play at the 176.4kHz rate? How about 2 channel SACD? What settings there? Anyone?

Make sure you've adjusted these settings:

If using your PS3 for CD, .mp3, or SACD playback, don't forget to adjust your music settings under:

Settings > Music Settings >

Here you can adjust the output frequency to 44.1 / 88.2 / 176.4kHz under 'Audio CD Output Frequency'. You can also adjust the bitmapping but you will have to choose which sounds best to you
Type 3 on the bitmapping is most favorable according to the PS3/SACD FAQ

Apologies for the typo in the title. I am just really uptight about spelling correctly.

With those set, you should get the optimum stereo performance out of your PS3. All CD's should come across at 176.4, as long as they were recorded that way, of course.

no need to apologize for the typo, it's not like you were misusing words or anything (or ending your sentence in a preposition with )

For an SACD recommendation you might want to try posting in this thread. Also, let them know that you've looked through the SACD/PS3 FAQ, otherwise you'll get a bunch of posts telling you to check there. They should be able to help you if the CD settings will work with Multichannel (5.1) SACD playback.

Good Luck, and let us know what you work out!

I have looked through all those. I don't wish to be scolded for not using the search feature. I laughed while typing that sentence. Thanks, again.

I suppose the thing to do is have the 176.4 setting to play in stereo mode when using a regular CD and have that same 176.4 setting to play in Direct or Multich ( I can't remember if that is an option.) when playing a SACD.

Direct leaves the sound "untouched" and only amplified by the receiver. The other option will allow for audyssey and any adjustments you've made for bass/treble in the receivers menu setup. It should always show up as multichannel on the receivers display (with HDMI)

I would agree with what you've said above, I just don't have any experience with it.. And don't worry about being scolded. I got your back The guys in that thread are some of the more helpful on this site, mention you've searched, you've read the FAQ, and see what comes back..
