People are comparing two seperate console (that launched a year apart) at the same point in time, but not using a timeline. That is the incorrect way of looking at it. Is it possible for a console that's 5 months old to have more games than a console that's 17 months into it's developmental cycle? Look at the upcoming game releases in the "games" section. I would say the PS3 has the strongest line-up on a 17 month timeline.

yeah, no matter how often I tell 360 owners, they just ignore it and ramble on about something else...

they always say "I want to play games now....PS3 has no games"

I always say...."at this point last year, the 360 had nothing to offer"....

and they say...again...."I want to play games now...PS3 has no games"

good argument for a system that is almost out of it's fetal stages and doesn't even have 5 games I'd buy...while the PS3 hasn't even been out 6 months....

these 360 fans have been down in the dumps for so long between the XBOX vs PS2 that they will take any advantage they can get, regardless if it's a dumb argument...

I like the option to align launches...it clearly shows that PS3 is consistantly ahead of XBOX 360 at this point in its life cycle...

So why does everybody continue to spell doom and gloom for Sony? Don't say its all about Wii - it blows both consoles out of the water in sales.

It's all fear driven. It's meant to keep as many new people from buying a PS3 as possible.

ummm, came out in November, it is now May, means it has been out for a little bit more then 6 months.

Edit:
Is there any links to how many PS3 have sold in the US, not a press release from Sony.

The official release date was November 17th 2006 (just checked my receipt). Today is May 17th 2007, so today would be the SIXTH (6) MONTH ANNIVERSARY~!

That's a huge amount of PS3s already though. I think it's caught out some developers, Bethesda/Ubisoft come to mind.

I agree. I hear various arguements where 360 ppl (both well behaved fans and fanboys alike) claim the PS3 has no games out now. I often cut right back saying "neither does 360" since, IMO, nothing on it is worth my time or funds. I think a read through of my game collection would show what it is I play: http://members.cox.net/musashi2/games.xls

As I see it, neither of them have good games available today, but by contrast the PS2 has a ton. But which next-gen system can play PS2 games?

Side note: I think that Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and White Knight Story combine to make the PS3's future brighter than the 360's, my opinions on their present state's aside. Then there's multipltform titles, which I'd prefer on PS3 since: it's more powerful, better controller, and I already have one for watching Blu-ray.

Well, that and the fact that so many 360s have bricked or had other problems. I've owned a 360 since April of '06, and recently it's developed a "disc scratching" and "freezing up" problem. Unless something drastic changes, this will be the last MS console I will ever buy.

Agreed. Once the titles start rolling out, they will sell systems.

True, but in fairness, the PS2 didn't hit critical market penetration until after it dropped in price to $199. That being said, I think Sony is smart here. They loaded the PS3 for bear, knowing that it would be the console for the next 5-10 years, whereas MS seems to just plan on issuing something whenever it suits their fancy or they can make a killing doing it. $180 200GB HDD? Pshaw, I don't think so, Billy-Boy...

yes...this still proves my point on how this system is still in it's fetal stages....by the time winter hits, we'll see how things look then..

Found the numbers for April-

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted PS3 sales in the U.S. for April would be around 100K. Unfortunately for Sony, they were even worse. PS3 sold a woeful 82,000 units for the month, while the Nintendo DS once again stole the show with 471K. PS3 sales were so low that Nintendo's ancient GBA sold more with 84K. The best selling console was Nintendo's Wii with 360K sold, while the Xbox 360 sold an unimpressive 174K. Sony's PS2 beat out the 360 (again) with 194K. The PSP sold 183K units and the GameCube (essentially on life support) sold just 13K.

On a life-to-date basis, the hardware install bases in the U.S. now look like this:

# PS2 – 38.2 million

# GBA – 35.7 million

# GameCube – 11.7 million

# Nintendo DS – 10.9 million

# PSP – 7.4 million

# Xbox 360 – 5.4 million

# Wii – 2.5 million

# PS3 – 1.3 million

Just thinking out loud here...Wii sales are dominating the market, and while they are not 'next-gen' it is impossible to ignore if you are a 3'rd party game maker - like EA Sports. I'm afraid that Nintendo's great product is going to hurt the future of video games over the next few years with it's poor performing hardware. Why make a game that will sale only 1 million copies for a high-def model when you can make a last-gen model that will sale 3 million copies?

EA sports is out to sale games...and in Wii is the top selling console then that is what they will gear their product too...

Especially in the technology/entertainment buisness. Other than the Wii, sales of consoles have not been up to expectations. I guess everyone is hoping for a big holiday season. If it disapoints...expect some blood in the streets in 08'.

Certain people deal in absolutes. They are in the lead or not. Others like meaningful comparisons. So, let's look at the six month point.

I believe this is a fairly accurate 6 month count of console sales in the US:

Wii - 2.8 million
N64 - 2.2-2.4 million
PS2 - 2.1 million
Xbox - 1.9 million
GC - 1.6 million
360 - 1.5 million
PS3 - 1.4 million
PS1 - 700-800k

It can be said the PS/3 has fallen behind the Xbox 360 slightly at the six month point. But, there is the Wii and the price of the PS/3 that had an effect. On the other hand, the BD movie player should be compensating (and perhaps Pirates of the Carribean and other blockbusters will start swaying people).

Notice that the Xbox 360 is actually behind the original Xbox.

I wonder whether the egos of the Xbox 360 folk will be able to deal with the Wii blow past? I suspect THEN they will saying the Wii shouldn't count (versus constantly hitting PS/3 supporters over the head with one).

Gary
