Star Wars: The Complete Saga (1977-2005)

unless you decide to ignore the prequels, you really should be watching them from 1-6 as that is how the story unfolds. By watching 4-6 first, all you are trying to do is maintain the "surprise" of things like Vader being Luke's father but unless you have one of those MIB flashy mind-erase things and use it every time you watch the films, you already know that. I could see that if you were showing it to someone new but after that, doesn't really make any sense to watch it in any other order. It would be like watching T2 first, then going back to watch Terminator so you can see how John Connor came about, etc. Just my opinion.

That how I see it too. Some folks love to go on about preserving the surprise of Luke's parentage with IV, V, I, II, II, VI, but if you've already seen the films then saving the reveal is utterly pointless. People keep putting the reveal on a pedestal, which is funny because it's become one of the most well-known and well-worn tropes of nerd culture.

So what would you guys recommend? I am not the biggest fan of the prequels but I do love the original 3 Star Wars movies. Amazon is selling the trilogies separately for $31.99 so I could get all 6 films for $64. Or they are selling the 9 disc 6 film collection for $90. Do you guys think all the extras are worth the $26 more dollars? I am debating which ones to get and I like the packaging better in the 2 separate trilogies. What would you guys suggest?

I don't think the extras are worth $26 unless you are a big Star Wars fan and enjoy watching extras like that. You have to ask yourself if you will re-watch them too. I would probably lean on just getting the movies.

I found the extras preaty underwhelming myself. I'm sure before the BD format ends we'll get another release (hopefully with better extras). I'd say just get the trilogy set.

I would definitely go with the Saga collection. The bonus discs are a lot of fun and the Star Warriors documentary was fantastic.

Just remember to keep the bonus disc from the DVD box set as it has the Empire of Dreams documentary, which was not ported over to BD.

I do not like how they have the extras organized and how difficult they made them to access and watch seamlessly.

Yeah that's my problem. Also don't like the fact that we've got a whole thing devoted to Star Wars comedy, yet no newer doctumentary or interview with Lucas. Plus the fact that we know there are more deleted scenes then what was put on there. The vintage docs were a nice addition, but why no From Star Wars to Jedi??????????

That Empire of Dreams documentary is the best Star Wars extra ever IMO.

Doesn't From Star Wars to Jedi contradict a lot of what later turns up to have happened in the making of the prequels? I know if you watch the interview that Lucas did with Leonard Malten on the VHS tapes of the original trilogy that Lucas is either lying or delusional.

It basically pulls the plug on Lucas' whole "I had everything planned as one big connected story from the beginning" yarn.

What's funny is Rinzler's current "Making of..." books (which are awesome and everyone should own them) do a good job of presenting that truth as well.

If you don't mind used, and you have a FYE near you, there is a 40% off used BD's at FYE and my local FYE had multiple sets for 89.99, so with 40% off it would be 53.99.

Lucas made a lot of contradictions. Back in 1996 he had an interview on TV about the 1997 Special Editions. When asked why James Earl Jones was chosen as the voice of Darth Vader he said "I discovered that out of the three movies, we only had one black actor, and back then everyone was trying to be politically correct so I hired another for the voice of Darth Vader"

In every single interview afterward, he said "We wanted a deep, dark voice. And Jones has that type of voice" He even convinced Jones that was the truth (or he convinced him to lie), as Jones has given the "deep voice" story in interviews as well.

I'm guessing that actually Lucas hired Jones for the voice, because correct me if I'm wrong, was he even credited when the original Star Wars came out in '77??? I'm preaty sure I read somewhere that Lando being played by an actor of color was a response to the lack of such actors/actresses in the first film. Who knows, Lucas is very strange when it comes to being PC. He is apparently a very liberal man, yet there are some definite instances of what liberals would call racist caracitures in films he has done...sadly Red Tails being one even though I don't think he quit realizes it.

Looks about as good as the DVD which is very cheap used on amazon or ebay anyway.
