They'll probably be remastered at a better quality for sure, but not the 4k ultra super-duper double lightsabered restoration many think will happen.

Some people in the online community forget that we are relatively small. These types of films sell millions upon millions of copies. We are a very small percent of that big pie.
There would be interest for a new transfer of the original films presented in 1080p, and plenty of people notice and dislike the changes. But please continue talking about how unrealistic and unreasonable it is for this small unruly group to actually want to see Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as they were theatrically released and existed for decades, presented on a level comparable to the treatment bestowed upon, say, Happy Birthday to Me from Mill Creek.

I'm assuming this is one of the bad editions? I don't really have anything to compare it to since I've never seen the original theatrical cuts.
Are you watching the first disc of that set and is the video anamorphic and audio in 5.1?

I ask this...because you probably won't notice the CGI Dewbacks.

yes, i think this is the special edition.
It would be even greater if you watched them without knowing anything about the story. Do you? or you don't?

The current set sold over half a million copies and generated $84M in its first week. I don't think the majority of those people are going to buy it again, just to see the orange blob under Luke's landspeeder or the horrible matte lines on the Rancor. Sure, there are some who never bought this release, but those are about the only people who are going to buy this version, should it ever come about, and they are a very small percentage of the Blu-ray buying consumers.

Yea it's anamorphic and I put in the first disc, 2nd disc just said bonus features, and I don't know about the audio but I'm assuming it's 5.1 (I don't have a surround sound system or anything so I've never really payed attention to audio details before). The effects don't look horrible or anything for a movie that came out in 77 but I'm sure a lot of that is because of upgrades and such.

The only thing I knew about the universe prior to starting this movie was the Darth vader being luke's father thing, which I'm assuming every living human knows, and that the prequels covered annakin's turn to the dark side becoming darth vader. That's about it.

I think realistically speaking the Star Wars brand, and people who like the original Star Wars movies, transcends the audience of most catalog Blu-rays. We're talking about Star Wars here like it's No Blade of Grass (which actually has a modern HD transfer even if it's only presented currently on DVD-R from WAC).

Let's not go too far the other way. There isn't some huge pool of people who bought the exiting BDs and can't wait to double-dip on a UOT BD release but those people do exist. They might not exist in numbers large enough to make the success of a UOT release an obvious slam-dunk but their numbers probably aren't insignificant either.

I think so. I'd love to have to original originals, provided they did the set justice. Proper remaster, more than just barebones, etc.

You never know with Disney, but perhaps it might behoove them to start the remastering process now, and include them(UOT) when the inevitable 9-film set is released.
Although it would be interesting to see what a kickstarter would come up with in terms of fan support.

Realistically, it's probably what, anywhere between 20-50,000 consumers? Yeah, it's a portion of the Blu-ray buying public, but they don't represent a large portion at all. That said, there are people like me who would buy it just because it's Star Wars too.

Ah, ok.
Well, this is what i meant. That if you didn't know this, it would be even more enjoyable!
I watched Star Wars films for the first time on TV, probably in 1990-1991 (i was 10-11).
Didn't know anything about them. It was quite a SHOCK!!

How in the holy hell did you come to this conclusion? Do you know anything about the Star Wars fan base?

And a kickstarter campaign? We're supposed to cover Disney's cost for making the discs and still buy them? Do you have a clue how many billions of dollars Disney has already?

I am going to go to the store early in the morning to pick up my copy of the original theatrical releases of Star Wars. That way I have time to watch all three before the game 7 of the World Series starts where the Chicago Cubs win it.

I think the question is, what would constitute an authentic Blu-ray release of the original theatrical editions that everyone would be satisfied with? Many detest the additional footage that was added into the films. While I've enjoyed the new special editions, not everyone does. But, what would everyone live with? Upgraded: video quality, graphics/special effects, upgraded audio?

That's the real question here. What remastered or upgraded components would everyone be willing to live with?

I think you DRASTICALLY underestimate the original Unaltered trilogy fanbase....star wars is probably one of THE LARGEST franchises on the PLANET with an ENORMOUS fanbase that has been begging for the trilogy in it's unaltered form. I'd say EASY 1/2 a million would sell in the blink of an eye

lol The same could be said to you, you could be DRASTICALLY overestimating this, hell I want to see the UOT bad myself, but I surely will not hold my breath for it.

This is why there are those of us making our own versions and sharing the fruits of the labor, these other versions may not be 100% perfect but a lot of them are better then nothing.

My feeling is that had Lucas limited his Special Editions to just cleaning up a few obviously dated effects and perhaps the addition of the Jabba and Biggs scenes in ANH, there would never have been fan outrage. In fact, they would probably be as celebrated as Wise's final cut of Star Trek The Motion Picture.

But even if you're down with all of Lucas' changes, he still could have prevented the fan backlash he received if he had made it a policy to always have the originals made available. That's all we can hope from Disney/Fox at this point.

the point many people are missing is that the series holds a cult following like almost NO OTHER film can hold a candle too. there have documentaries, books, cons etc DEDICATED to just this cult following. We're not talking about even something like Lawrence of Arabia, or Blade Runner. all are GREAT films but the fanbase is nowhere near as rabid, immense and worldwide to such a degree. the Star Wars universe is an unparalleled PHENOMENON in the world of film. to simply say "I doubt enough people would buy it to make it even worth the effort" really raises an eyebrow when other less popular titles get remastered and re-released all the time
