And the Dolby Optical release was L,C,R and mono surround. Fans would freak out if they released with mono surround. You could release a mono mix in addition to the 5.1/7.1 but it wasn't the preferred mix and it probably wouldn't sound any better than the automatic mix down that happens in the player or TV.
As has been said, these theatrical mixes could be mapped to conventional speaker layouts without too much bother. And what's wrong with a mono surround, anyhow? If the whole point is to preserve the original mix, then a mono surround it should have. Heck, they could always put a 'final cut' 5.1/7.1 mix on there too, just to sate the morons who aren't happy unless every speaker is pumping out noise.

And as for the mono track, it's not about having it sound better than a 5.1 mixdown, what an asinine thing to say. It's worth including as a curio because there are tweaks and changes to that mix which haven't been included in any other version, like the alternate dubbing for Aunt Beru.

Why would you have it in mono? That's not how they were released in 77,80 and 83.

Well, SW was initially released in 70mm 6-track and 35mm stereo. When it went to a wide release in June '77, it was also released with a mono mix that contained a few changes and additions. The majority of the theaters then only had mono capabilities, so this is what most people heard in 1977.

That's a bingo. And that's why, if we're talking about preserving the original mixes, the mono must also be retained as a historical SW artefact.

For people who would probably call themselves Star Wars fans, some of y'all don't seem to have a ****ing clue.

I saw it 15 times between May 1977 and July 1978 in 4 different cities all over California (LA Area, Fresno and the Bay Area) and in all the theaters I saw it in it was in Dolby Stereo. So I can't speak to the mono because for me the original release was in Stereo.

All are great changes
I wish Lucus would have shoehorned Jar-Jar into the orignal trilogy some how cracking jokes and stepping in crap. That change would have been even better then the incredible new dance number at Jabba's palace.

Maybe stick him into the Jedi Rocks scene and have him break dancing.

I'm pretty sure the Prequels are so close to perfect that we won't see as many substantial changes like we did for the OT. The OT desperately needed those changes, and were flawed without the changes GOD LUCAS made.

Spot on. This is the problem with the Bonus DVD version ( from laser disc ) of a New Hope. The last line of dialogue from Beru, "I think so" , is from the stereo mix, not the mono. Really gets my goat!!

I think if they are released, it will be before the new movie hits cinemas as to build up hype.

I just recently went through the entire saga on blu-ray for the first time. My roommate had never seen any of the films before, which I'm sure you'll all agree, is unacceptable for a 20 year old guy. Within 5 days, we were able to watch them all in a private screening room at my school. It was awesome to see these films on a large screen, and I was very impressed at the a/v quality, particularly the OT, which looks just as good as the PT.

I also debated whether to go in episodic order or to start with the OT. Ultimately, I decided the OT is a better introduction into the Star Wars universe. While I love the PT as well, I find one of it's biggest flaws is that it relies on the audience having seen the OT. If they were truly meant to view them in order of episode number, then The Phantom Menace should have taken the time to introduce and explain the elements of the universe, just as they did in A New Hope. My choice was particularly rewarding considering my friend was shocked by reveal of Vader being Luke's father (which I take for granted that everyone knows).

Now after many years, I've finally convinced my mother to actually sit down and watch the saga. However, this time I'm going in episodic order, as the main element that she's watching for the themes of how evil comes to power and how order once again is restored. She already knows Luke's paternity, but what is nice is that she is unaware of Anakin's fate. We've only gotten through Episode I, but so far she really thinks Anakin will turn out to be the hero.

It could be, but I doubt Disney would go to such lengths.
