It was probably done that way in the coloring book to tame down the violence.

The sad thing is a 5 year old with crayons and a coloring book could make Jabba look better than he does in ANH now.

Yet there's a page of Indy getting hammered to color along with Toht threatening to burn Marion's face with a red-hot poker.

I'd guess the Raiders coloring book was made months before the film was finished, and apparently there were early preview cuts done by Spielberg and Lucas which had the original whip fight, and the eventual gun one. Apparently Lucas was hesitant to use the gun one because he didn't think audiences would like it, Spielberg thought it was great, so during the preview when it was shown it got the biggest laugh and was kept in.

Funny how Lucas seems to not like Han shooting at Greedo when Greedo has a gun aimed at Han, yet he seems to have no problem with Leia choking Jabba to death with a metal chain in ROTJ. I know when I was a kid I found that far more disturbing than the Han thing.

It seems to me many people first and foremost want the version of a particular movie they first saw - whether original version or not. I've seen this with other movies in threads other than Star Wars and E.T.
If the special editions or the 2002 version of ET is the first version that a kid sees, that's child abuse.

I have a new hope that an even more special edition comes out some day with Walrusman shooting at Ben first. It always bothered me that Ben chopped his arm off in cold blood like that. Totally inappropriate for a PG rating. Maybe call it the "Special Retard Edition".

Child abuse is forcing your own views on them instead of letting them make their own choices when it comes to what they "should" like and what they "shouldn't".

Who said they had to like the original version? I said that it should be the first version that they see.

Nice try, though.

Supposedly the arm chopping is what got them a "PG" rating, rather than a "G"!

I can believe it, the MPAA was pretty liberal in those days. Beneath The Planet of the Apes had people being shot, complete with bloody wounds, and was rated "G". So was Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger the same year SW came out (1977), complete with Jane Seymour nip-slip and violence like people getting stabbed, speared, bloody tiger marks, etc.

These days, anything perceived as violent or scary gets at least a "PG". The "PG" ratings on movies like Frozen or Wreck-It Ralph are bulls--t. There isn't anything there I would consider bad for an unattended child to see.

What I always found weird was that the arm was bloody, but in the prequels there was no blood (Anakin's arm, Dooku's head, etc.)

Or Empire with Luke's hand. Numerous kills by Luke in Jedi with no blood.

Sabers instantly cauterize, except for Walrus Men apparently. And Ben Stiller.

Heh. Luke's lightsaber in Jedi might as well be a wiffle bat for all of the damage that it does during the sail barge assault.

Not to dump on Jedi again, wait, yes actually to very much dump on Return of the Jedi because there is no blood in it.

No blood - no selection into the National Film Registry.
