The colors look like they did before the Lucas's color correction.
Yup his saber looked pinkish/purplish in the 2004/2011 version.

It looks more reddish in that new trailer.

I was simply talking about the Reliance 4k print. Lowry became a part of Reliance a few years ago.

And no, that is clearly 2004 compositing. That is probably how the 2k Lowry print originally looked before a colorist got a hold of it and screwed up the color/contrast:

Top: Reliance
Middle: GOUT
Bottom: Blu Ray

That could be the case but I hope it's actually a new scan.

I believe it is a new scan - perhaps a 4k scan of the 97SE. But since we now know for a fact that there will be a screening of a brand new 4k DCP of the Special Edition this week in Atlanta, I just don't have any hope that this is for a theatrical restoration.

I'd take the 97 SE over the 2004 & 2011 versions any day. There's no Hayden, no magic rock in front of R2D2, no "Nooooooooooooooo!" in ROTJ, includes the original voice of Boba Fett, etc.

You misunderstand my point about the branching. If you were to branch the originals and the SEs, it wouldn't be possible (at least in the case of the first movie) because there are so many changes.

But the subsequent changes to the SEs post-1997 were very short in length, so there would be no space issues if they were to transfer the 1997 version and then branch the 2004/2011 changes off of that. Hence one disc just for the original version, and another disc for the branched SEs.

Still, as you pointed out, these ****ers always hold something back for the next round of releases, so me wanting the Special Editions preserved in this way is pie in the sky stuff - after all, why do the definitive edition when you can keep milking it? But I think you give them too much credit re: Empire of Dreams and the Disney sale, though. IMO LFL left it off because they're douchebags and they know we'll keep buying this stuff, so the opportunity to re-release EoD would've come along eventually. I doubt they left out those Indy 4 extras for the Indy BD boxset just because the Disney sale was around the corner...

Tbh I'd rather have the 1997 Special Editions than the later 2004/2011 editions.

The colour timing, contrast etc wasn't messed around with those plus they still contain a lot of stuff that was altered in the later editions such as Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker's ghost, Boba Fett's original voice etc.

For me, going back to the original color timing is just as important as the original content itself. It also appears the 97 SEs had the original color timing or at least very close to it.

Ever since the 2004 DVDs, it's been goofed up. The blue push and weird orange-reddish skin tones are most annoying among other issues.

• Those lightsaber shots in the reliance video look like the 2004 recompositing.

• A Reliance/Lowry staffer apparently did work on this back in 2012, starting on it before Disney took over, so I doubt Lucasfilm would have been working on theatrical restorations at that time: "Restoration, Mapping, Dirt Picking : Star Wars 4K Blu-Ray Release" - 9/2012-12/2012
http://www.creativecow.net/interstit...-services&id=0

• There is a new 4k DCP screening of Star Wars in Atlanta on July 18. It has been confirmed to be the special edition. I would bet it is from this same lowry 4k print. http://plazaatlanta.com/new_website2...ary-screening/
Is anyone here going to see the 4K DCP on July 18th? If so, you have a lot of homework to do to fill us in.

This is just pure speculation at the moment.

We might still yet get news about the Theatrical Cuts being part of the restoration.

Fingers crossed.

Not to mention Lowry's infamous frozen grain that plagues those transfers as well.

Grain isn't supposed to be static and stick to objects!

Even though Reliance Media Works (Lowry) are doing this restoration as well, they're grain management technology has gotten much better in recent years as evidenced by their work on the 1st two Alien films and The Terminator for example.

Not giving up hope yet. It's still possible that a theatrical reconstruction could happen using this method: "Perhaps the easiest option would be to simply follow the 1997 restoration pattern but in the digital realm: scan the negative in 8K, then scan the stored pre-SE shots or re-comp them, and fill in any damaged areas with IPs or separation masters, reconstructing the original cut, then digitally remove dirt and damage, and finally use a Technicolor print as a color reference for the Digital Intermediate created. Such a product would be theatrically viable, as pristine as when it had been shot, and 100% faithful in image and color to the original release." - from "The Secret History of Star Wars"

The frozen grain looks terrible from some of the processing. There is also some edge enhancement.

Agreed, I am fine with Reliance working on this given the titles you mentioned.

Yup those old Lowry transfers are very "digital" looking.

Hopefully they'll do it right this time around.

I see many prefer the '97 versions far as the SE goes, personally the '04 versions are probably my favorite SE versions overall. The CGI Jabba is much improved (still not close to perfect, but it's significantly better than the '97 one) and Greedo shooting first looks a bit less awkward. In TESB Ian McDiarmid replaces the old Emperor and Luke's scream from the '97 version is removed. Stuff like Boba now having Temuera Morrison's voice and Sebastian Shaw being digitally altered to look more like an old Hayden Christensen in the unmasking scene in ROTJ, that I can accept as being done to make the movies flow better as a saga.

Overall, the '04 changes made sense I think, when looking at it from a "saga perspective". The '11 versions though I just can't defend, stuff like Vader's noooo in ROTJ is just... ugh.

I'll take a 1997 4k remaster over what's currently on blu-ray...as long as they mute the Luke screaming after jumping at the end of Empire.

Han shooting Greedo and Sabastian Shaw as Anakin in blurry non-anamorphic widescreen is still better than the BD set.

I just live with the current Blus and their flaws for now.

The "non-specialized" versions are said to the answer though. I have not checked them out, but would love to see the 720p versions.
