I would say that's true, but you only have to look at how much 'back and forth' there is in the Transformers 4 thread to know that folks love arguing about films on the internet (guilty as charged, m'lud), no matter whether it's cinematic garbage or one of the greatest movies of all time.

Don't forget how butthurt some Trekkies are over the new Abrams films.

I enjoy ALL the TREK films. Even the not-so-good ones.

And *all* the STAR WARS films. No matter how much the internet tells me I shouldn't.

Soooooooooo to attempt to bring this back to something newsworthy...there's a screening tonight that's supposedly a DLP of the special edition. We're waiting to find out what the deal is.

At the exhibitors had the common courtesy to make perfectly clear that they were showing the SE. Saves them the trouble of people leaving mid-film otherwise...

Actually, they originally promoted it as the original version and then changed it after they started selling tickets. Some people asked for refunds.

However, there's never been a DLP screening before. So...let's see...

Halfway through? If we're talking color timing, I'd be leaving as soon as Artoo and Threepio showed up.

Awww...really? You wouldn't wait to see if Artoo was hiding behind a rock?

I'd say that the fact that someone insisted that Artoo be put behind a rock 30 years later is the "incredible" part.

You are right on that & the fact that it was a 4 second change (in the movie) that altered the world

i myself personally have no problems with the so called "upgrades" its like most anything in film... you either like it or dont not that big of deal i bought the complete set when it came out and will more then likely buy the non spec'd ones too dont matter to me. my biggest beef with all this new SW stuff is that they wiped out all the EU stuff... some was terrible and some was just plain AWESOME like the dark empire series now that would have made a great set of films... and totally plausible with the direction they are moving in today! but alas they did not and that makes me sad...

And they thought they'd get away with a bait-and-switch scam like that?

Star Wars isn't like Folgers crystals, people will notice the difference.

No, but it did make that scene make a whole lot less sense all on it's own,
even if one never knew about the previous versions to begin with, since the rock then inexplicably disappears in a subsequent shot.

In that 4 seconds alone it changed his characters entire demeanor.

And gave him the powers of vaporization, since that's the only logical way he got out from behind the rocks and why they don't appear in the same place a few moments later.

Both versions of the scene are poor, cheap looking and dated, but Lapti Nek isn't obnoxious and dumbed down like Jedi Rocks. It's without doubt easily the lesser of the 2 evils.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Why wait until 2020 for a hypothetical amount of money when there is a huge sum to be made right now? Home entertainment formats can only last so long.

Truthfully, I think a big part of that decision was getting the Fox fanfare at the beginning of the prequels. Despite what a lot of people think, he really did want to please fans (before a lot of them got really, really ugly, and he became somewhat bitter about it), and the fanfare was a big part of Star Wars tradition.

I'm sure that they came to that conclusion on their own after a careful analysis of the film trilogy's tone, the quality of the effects, and the appropriateness of the sequence and are not at all just parroting things said by one of their parents. Jedi Rocks sucks Sarlaac tentacles, but come on, two year olds would love anything with moving colors.

Episode VII is happening next year. They're going to want to hype that up as much as possible. What better way to do it than to do something that's never been done before (at least, in the last 30 years): re-release the original version. After all, that's what this new story is continuing. It won't do them any good to do it in 2020.

A bird in the hand...indeed.
