It isn't even because of some "Lucas ruined my childhood" thing - I got the special editions on VHS in 1997 and I enjoyed them then, but that doesn't mean anything - I was like 13 years old, I didn't know any better. |

Seriously though, people who like the prequels (like me) don't mind the little spot of continuity. I do prefer the Emperor change instead of monkey lady that they originally used. Anyway, I'd be happy with both versions. But this conversation is like some Twilight Zone episode that never ends (page 2,375). Our children's children's children will be carrying on the fight when we download movies directly to our brains. |

Now I'm not as well versed on Disney lore as you, Ernest, which is why I was wondering if Disney doesn't mind working with another big company. Off the top of my head I can't recall if Disney has ever done anything like that before? Which is why I would think, with their deep pockets, they would rather just buy Fox out of the picture(no pun intended) totally. So with Ep.7 due in about 16 months, I wonder if cutting a deal is even possible...I guess it is, then they could rush everything "to the presses". Just seems like a real longshot(never tell you the odds, I know) to get out a new set, let alone the UOT, to usher in/advertise the new film. I get your reasoning, about Disney wanting to extend an olive branch, and I really hope that branch is extended, but the timeframe just seems very tight, with so many things in play, right now. |

Of course Fox would be involved in a new set, they're contractually bound to distribute the existing films! LFL make the content, design the packaging etc, while Fox do the printing, replication and distribution. That's how it's worked for decades, and there's nothing Disney can do to change it without buying Fox out of that contract.
But they didn't jettison Paramount when they took over Marvel, so why wouldn't they do the same now with Fox? As I said before, they're happy to kick back and let others do the donkey work while the contract runs down. I don't see why this is such a hard thing for people to grasp. I mean, I'm sure Disney want to get a return on their $4 billion outlay but a new, wholly Disney-owned and produced Blu-ray release* would be a drop in the bucket and a theatrical run of the original originals wouldn't get close to the $138m take of the '97 SE of Star Wars. No, they'll start to make some mega coinage with the new movies, hence the slate of approximately 197 films for the next few years, so buying out Fox RIGHT NOW doesn't make any sense to me because they've got bigger fish to fry. *of which they wouldn't see 100% anyway because THEY would then have to shoulder the cost of replication, advertising and distribution Last edited by Geoff D; 07-20-2014 at 02:05 PM. |

That's yet another reason I am sure Disney has whatever needs to be sewn up sewn up in terms of their purchase of Lucasfilm - we can speculate all we want, but I find it hard to believe that we are going to come up with anything Disney hasn't already thought of before they spent 4B on Lucasfilm, especially since Disney is a publicly traded company. I have extreme doubts that they would have completed the purchase without ensuring that whatever arrangements needed to be made were in place to exploit the franchise as they see fit. I find it difficult to believe they didn't learn that lesson from Marvel. |

You don't have to accept the special editions. I want the TC's in HD as well you know. ![]() It's just so annoying that people have to get so bats**t crazy over it all and argue ad nauseam. ![]() Last edited by The Fallen Deity; 07-21-2014 at 03:00 PM. |

When the Death Star is destroyed at the end of Jedi and it explodes has that crackling/clipping always been in the mix or is it just a screw up?

The sound effects throughout Empire's DVD/BD mix run very close to distortion as well, it's far too pumped-up and overcooked. |

Having said that, I did enjoy the overall experience and I think it's the overall experience that counts - not obsessing over errors and little changes that only the fanboys would notice. And as much as I like the idea of practical effects and classic animation techniques, the effects shots, even the re-done ones, are starting to look a bit creaky. One thing I noticed that I never noticed before is that in one shot (I now forget which one), there is a set of Woodstock Wind Chimes hanging. That really made me laugh. Someone else recently complained that the sound was distorted on TESB BD, but I didn't notice that at all. It sounded pretty good. One of the reasons I re-watched the film is because I acquired new front speakers (Aperion Versus Grand Towers) and I wanted to see how the film sounded. |

It's not only the changes, it's just that you're watching an inconsistent thing that is quite kitsch if you ask me!
It's like the Star Trek original series. I can't understand how can anyone watch this series with the new effects. You're watching a 60s series with 90s (or I don't know when) effects? Totally inconsistent. One of the first things I learned about art, is that it should have consistency!! |

No changes should be made whatsoever unless they also incude the original version as well. That goes for any film or TV show. They are a product of their time...that's almost just as important as the film itself. Look at all the posters, marketing designs and everything else that went along with Star Wars in 1977...it screams 70's and should always remain in the 70's.
