![]() Here this might explain further: 5) Q: I heard the original versions do not exist as film elements. The negatives were destroyed, and there are no good copies. Is this true? A: No, this is untrue. There are relatively good quality 35mm print masters, such as interpositves and fine-grain prints, as well as Technicolor prints. There is also a perfect duplicate of the negative in separation masters. Finally, the original negatives were not destroyed. What is meant when it is said that "they don't exist" or permanently altered is that the assembled edit of the film which uses the original pieces was re-ordered from the original edit to the Special Edition edit, so in this sense the original does not "exist." It would be very easy to simply put the original pieces physically back in, but in a theoretical modern restoration they would just be scanned digitally to avoid re-cutting the negative. Awesome, a quote with no link. Typical. I'll further point out that there is NO link to anything, anywhere, which states that ANYTHING is due next year in regards to Star Wars other than Episode VII being released theatrically (in probably 6 different editions) on December 18th. |

Bad move. If you care about extras, I'm going to bet that very few of them will be ported over. And the "new" set will, again, probably not have the 2011 versions on it.

Almost anything Star Wars always sells for something. There are a number of Star Wars collectors out there. I am surprised at how well my 2004 original DVD boxset sells for at some sites.

It probably sells well because those are a different "edition" of the films but, more importantly, for the extras.

[QUOTE=Lentulus Batiatus;9497008]It took you 17 years to finally watch and notice the Jedi Rocks scene in the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi and you felt so compelled you had to run to this board and this very thread to expunge your vitriol about it?
yea I actually ran to this board, or perhaps I saw this thread looking through the forums and since I just watched it, yes 17ish years later, I decided to see what current topics were being discussed… I still had a bad taste from my experience. Ok, 2/10 was harsh and unfair, that is retracted. I am a fan of the series as a whole, just not a die hard who watches it often like when I was a kid burning copies on VHS. |

If we believe reports from around the time the special editions were made, the negatives were in such a bad shape that they were almost too far gone, to restore. Granted that might be malarkey on Lucasfilm's part but if it isn't, then there's no way those negatives were put back together, they would have been stored. So if that's true they'll have to look elsewhere for the new restorations (examples of which you've highlighted).

Star Wars and Empire are the only two films inducted into the Registry currently, but I heard that they requested prints for all three. Lucas tried to offer them Special Editions and were told no way! So all this they don't exist or are too damaged all bunk by Lucas. As long as there is a Library of Congress...there will be an Original Cut. Last edited by Elvis; 07-27-2014 at 02:43 AM. |

LOL first, why would I even bother clicking a link in someone's signature that doesn't even stare what it is, let alone be noted as an official source for a quote that you failed to other linking?
Second, 1 person's opinion blog ranting about how evil Uncle George once again raped him isn't much for evidence. I didn't bother to read any of that massive wall of text but the final paragraph were, right on cue, the crying entitled fanboy whines that even though they were given something they were told wouldn't happen it wasn't in high enough quality to satisfy their entitlement. And since all your posts are about YOUR entitlement (as many others seem to feel as well) it just further pushes your version of reality from where the world is. If the original theatrical versions are released in full HD even then you will all be *****ing about the lack of 7.1 Atmos mixes or some other completely lame thing. And that's the entire point of this all and has been for over a decade. You feel so entitled to something that you will go so far as to completely discredit the creator in any way imaginable to prove your opinion and stand atop the mountains screaming to all the other peons who'll listen about who correct you are. I'm done discussing my favorite movie franchise and a huge influence of my life once again. There's no discussing it anymore with sane, rational people. It always turns into how terrible and talentless George Lucas is and how he had nothing to do with Star Wars, accept for maybe thinking up the name of some 3-second background alien. He's the creator, the visionary and the author. If he always wanted Han to shoot first then Han shoot's first. The rest of you need to get over it. |

I vehemently disagree with anyone who would argue it is not somehow George Lucas' right to change what he made. If any others with a stake in Star Wars are not going to object, then he can have at it, in as many increasing permutations as he wants to. I would disagree with equal enthusiasm with anyone who argues George Lucas should not expect anyone to have a perfectly valid negative reaction to that decision. Revisions are noted in books. Updated versions of songs are called remixes. Films are labeled as director's cuts and extended cuts and alternate cuts. Those fans who are upset have even more totally valid reason to be angry at Lucas for trying to rewrite film history, since Lucas did indeed make that speech about colorization. He is in the right making the choices, and he's got the power to prevent people from seeing the original versions. Fans are also in the right to complain about it. Ownership or being the author of the art does not have anything to do with the way the public reacts to it. Last edited by tylergfoster; 07-27-2014 at 04:29 AM. |

And he never made it impossible for fans to see the version they choose. He didn't go door-to-door stealing away people's VHS and laser disc copies to be tossed into a giant bonfire. He just didn't feel inclined to release every version in every format every decade or so. No amount of *****ing from entitled fanboys will ever change the FACT that those versions do exist and are/were obtainable. Even after Lucas said he'd not release them he still did! But it's not good enough quality for you so you whine and cry and call him evil and money hungry and blah blah blah. But the TRUTH is he made available what he said wouldn't be. It's just not to your satisfaction. That's all it comes down to, entitlement by whiny fanboys with nothing better to do with their lives but proclaim how terrible Lucas is for taking away what they feel they are owed. That is your "perfectly valid" reason. That you feel you are owed something when, in fact, you are not. 'Unaltered' versions of the Star Wars trilogy exist. That is fact. They exist in multiple formats. That is fact. Going on and on and on about how horrible Jedi rocks is will never change the fact that the version without the dance number IS available in a digital format. Go out and buy it, watch it, and move on with your lives. |
