And yes, right from Episode 1, we learn that Palpatine subjugated his own HomeWolrd to further his Political Ambitions. He enslaved and killed millions on his own planet to become Supreme Chancellor.
Did anyone die on Naboo? Qui-Gon and Maul, some Gungans, a handful of soldiers, sure.

Sio Bibble said that "The Death Toll was catastrophic."

Never saw even a hint of it on screen, and wasn't Padme warned not to communicate, as in such things could be a trap? I suppose it would've helped The Phantom Menace to actually show such things -- a mindless mechanized army killing innocents -- as it would've given the film some dramatic stakes, like the Death Star destroying Alderaan.

"Show, don't tell." It's an axiom as old as cinema.

Ok, I'm sure at this point you're trolling, but I feel a need to respond to this.

Yes, fascist dictators often seem popular in news footage. That is because people who oppose them tend to get dead.

That's how I've always understood it. I don't think more than a handful of the Naboo were killed in the invasion (if that). I mean, it's a bunch of spindly robots muttering "Roger, Roger" at each other. His claim about the "catastrophic death toll" has to be deception to ensnare the queen.

As you say, there's no dramatic reason to avoid showing some of the carnage -- quite the opposite.

Even the Jedi doubt it. Qui-Gon says "It sounds like bait, to establish a connection trace."

Still, even without that minor detail Palpatine is still a Very Bad Man simply for paying these hoods to invade his home planet, and all for the purpose of creating political turmoil in the Republic so he can be elected as Chancellor.

And in the end some Gungans died. Some ships blew up and some pilots fried.

Anyone ever look at this thread and wonder where it could possibly go in the next year and a half? Episode VII is some time away and I kind of wonder if the whole thing will just collapse on itself before then.

Well, if there are remasters of the original trilogy (whether classic or SEs) next year, there will be a new thread and this one will definitely collapse by that point.

I guess I was thinking more about the general nature of the "discussion" than the specific thread. If we do get an OT Remaster thread, we'll probably all be *****ing about the color of the leaves on Endor in a year's time.

I just hope that the spoilers and rumours for Episode 7 can stay OUT of this Thread.

Good luck with that.

If you're dead set on going in blind, I'd maybe stay off the internet for a year and a half.

I would not doubt that!

But I think whatever they release will look better than the current color timing of the 2011s which is pretty poor all the way around.

Qui-Gon became a Force Ghost. Even he lived on in some capacity.

If we do get remasters next year and they are just the SE versions and no UOT I don't think the internet can handle it.

He was halfway there. His current state is more of a disembodied voice that can sometimes manifest.
