Not much of a "hole" there, since the recent release of the theatrical cut is sourced from an old LASERDISC master.

I've actually heard that there are still some old 35mm prints around of the original versions, so they could be cleaned up and fixed. Or they could try to create a new master from the LD rips?

I just don't understand why Lucas hates them so much and refuses to do a decent release of the theatrical versions. Sure, he might have problems with them, but we have more problems with the new versions. I just like what Ridley "King of the Director's Cut" Scott has done by using seamless branching and other ways to present multiple cuts of his films on DVD and Blu. I even remember what he says on his intro to the theatrical cut of Blade Runner, something like "This ISN'T my prefered cut of the film, but some people are fans of it, so if your one of them, here it is..."

Why can't Lucas just be a man and say, I might not like it, but some people do, lets do a decent release this time around. None of this childish attitude saying, oh I don't like it, so no one can have it.

Sorry for the rant, but I have issues with this and it's something I can't stand. But, here's a simple question for everyone that I just thought of: Why not have the Criterion Collection handle the release, then you know we can have a proper release on Blu.

I watched the restoration documentary for Roman Holiday and the interview with John Lowry made me laugh...paraphrasing since I'm not going to load this DVD: "Our intention is to remove any film granularity and imperfections while also being true to the filmmakers' original intentions."

The only instances I've noticed in Lowry Restorations where the grain was still there are in scenes where the grain is indistinguishable from elements in the shot. I.E. Removing the grain also removes rain, bugs, and other objects that can be confused with grain.

Don't get me wrong they do good work but as in the case of Once Upon A Time in The West, it may not be the right way to do a restoration.
This means excessive DNR and possibly EE. Are they saying they are going to make a mess out of IJ transfers. Details are in the grain. It may be okay to remove details for the DVD but not for the blu-ray. No point of having a blu-ray without the details....

I think a good indication of how great the Indiana Jones movies will look on BD can be found on the Crystal Skull BD. The teaser trailer, which is in HD, contains footage from the first 3 films and those shots look awesome!

Lucas probably has the 2K scans of the Star Wars negatives stored somewhere so if in the future if he decides to release them he can pull those out. And as far as I know he tracked down all the cinemas that kept their prints because some parts of the negatives were damaged beyond repair.

I dunno how much DNR movies that were filmed with a blue screen will really need. I just hope they look a lot better than the DVDs which really don't look too bad at all for DVDs.

Then I take it that you never saw the Star Wars trilogy DVDs released a few years back.

Just off of the top of my head:

- Crushed blacks throughout IV.
- Blooming oranges and greens in the space explosions.
- Blooming fluorescent blue on Artoo in eps IV and V.
- Blooming pinks during the gun battles aboard the blockade runner and in docking bay 94.
- Fluorescent red on the X-wings.
- Screwed up sound in IV.
- Outright removal and toning down of some of John Williams's classic score.
- Lightsabers changing colors throughout IV and V.

So the grain is the least of our worries here.

How the MIGHTY have fallen.

.

This sounds like a disaster. I haven't watched the DVD.

I will wait for the blu-ray to watch again... Hopefully all problems will be fixed and no excessive DNR and EE especially.

Yeah, if you get the dvds with both versions you can choose between the the fugly weird cartoon colors of the new version or the cruddy 1993 quality of the original versions. Stay classy lucasfilm, just keep focused on those Yoda bobble heads.

I certainly hope the 1980's Indiana Jones Trilogy will be released onto Blu-ray. Of course with all the extras from the 2003 and not too long ago individual releases. Of course I'd like more to see all those extras which were Laserdiscs and even VHS to be on the appropriate film it's for. I even saw showings of Raiders of the Lost Ark a couple weeks ago and Last Crusade only last week for Flashback Thursdays at my local cineplex. Both on the large screen. No idea why they didn't have Temple of Doom.
Star Wars? No thanks, I already have series burnout for awhile. Damn hilarious that Clone Wars movie is on Blu-ray.
Yes, I'm much more of an Indiana Jones fan compared to Star Wars.
Speaking of Lucasfilm Ltd. titles, I wonder when TUCKER: A Man and His Dream and WILLOW will be released onto Blu-ray? Honestly I want those two titles far more compared to any STAR WARS feature film.
Speaking of Temple of Doom, I do consider, in a way, Gunga Din to be the predecessor film/story to it. "You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din."
