I'm just wondering with all controversy surrouding ghostbusters having to much grain or excessive amount of grain. I mean don't get me wrong i don't have a problem with grain. I know why it's their i just like a thin layer of grain better. Anyway back to my original question how much grain or how grainy do you think these movies will be when their eventually released on blu.

Grain should be the least of your concerns. I've heard Lucas is going to digitally change all the Ewoks to Gungans, retconning Endor to Naboo.

Lowry Digital Images handled the restoration for Raiders, Temple, Last Crusade, A New Hope, Empire, and Return of the Jedi.
The DVDs sre representative of Lowry's work and Lowry also elminates at least 95-98% of the film grain regardless of the film stock used. I watched the restoration documentary for Roman Holiday and the interview with John Lowry made me laugh...paraphrasing since I'm not going to load this DVD: "Our intention is to remove any film granularity and imperfections while also being true to the filmmakers' original intentions." The only instances I've noticed in Lowry Restorations where the grain was still there are in scenes where the grain is indistinguishable from elements in the shot. I.E. Removing the grain also removes rain, bugs, and other objects that can be confused with grain. Don't get me wrong they do good work but as in the case of Once Upon A Time in The West, it may not be the right way to do a restoration. Last edited by steve_dave; 08-08-2009 at 04:13 AM. |

Since Lucas has a hand in it, they will look pretty damn good. I actually think Ghostbusters wasn't that bad really.

Steven Speilberg asked Lowry Digital to keep the grain intact for the Indiana Jones movies as for Star Wars I have no idea. It has been said that George Lucas asked them to remove all grain to make it look more like a digital movie though.

Didn't he say the original Star Wars films/reels dont exist anymore? only the SE versions? But yeah, thank god there hasnt been a recut of the Indy films, if they come out on Blu-Ray they will look stunning. You can tell also by the teaser for Indy 4 when it has footage from Raiders at the start in HD.

I'm not sure about the states but in Canada rogers HD has been showing all of the Indy movies for a bit. Them being my alltime favourite movies growing up, I have watched all three on vhs way too many times to count, dvd likewise since the release a few years back.
I'd just like to stress how many times I have seen these movies easily in the hundreds, when I was little I watched Last Crusade and Raiders near daily. So as you can imagine when the HD commercials came on I was eagerly, yet nervously waiting for them to show. Finally I got the chance when they became OnDemand, WOW is all I can say, I just got a visit from an old friend that has never looked better. I was literally shocked at how much it was like watching a new movie I had seen a million times. Although I can't comment on the sound that the blu will have, the picture I'm sure will be even better then the one I saw in HD that blew my mind, as Blu always looks better then my 1080i HD cable obviously. But, sorry to dissapoint some young folks but grain is beautiful, it's not goin anywhere on old movies and it shouldn't I was also of the opinion that ghostbusters looked great for the most part, with some soft moments. Indy has less grain, it's there though, but definitely no soft spots like ghostbusters. Haven't seen Star Wars in HD, hasn't been on any HD channels up here as far as I know. I think they will do Star Wars right, the dvds looked pretty damn good imo. The only thing I'm sure will dissapoint with Star Wars is I'd put money that like the dvds George Lucas only lets you get his rebutchered cgi lovefest versions, unless I'm totally mistaken and you can get a non remastered dvd set somewhere >.>. |
