Roughly two weeks ago, at Burbank Airport, two planes came within 20 seconds of colliding. One was a Southwest airliner with 80 passengers aboard, and hte other, another a small private plane.

The ATC had directed both planes to their correct flight paths, but the Southwest plane was off course. The ATC saw this, issued the order for an emergency correction at the last moment.

The Southwest plane made a violent evasive maneuver, narrowly avoiding a mid-air collision over a heavily populated area. A flight attendant wound up with a broken collarbone - while everyone was strapped in for the final approach, she wasn't, and wasn't warned as she checked her passengers.

The ATC had given the correct headings, and in a very few seconds, the pilot's failure to follow them exactly could have killed a lot of people, in the air and on the ground.

The ATC's attention was off that particular plane for a very few seconds. The pilot had many years of flight experience. They had very little time to avoid a complete disaster.

I'm glad they weren't playing cutesy-poo with some kid in the control tower.

Your mileage may differ.

But...but...but...if nothing bad happens, then it will be okay, so there shouldn't be problem, right? I suppose the police shouldn't enforce traffic laws if no one gets hurt.

I would have to disagree about the seriousness of this infraction. The main danger wasn't that the kid was giving the commands, but that the ATC's attention was split between his duty and his kid. Remember the small plane and helicopter that recently collided over the Hudson? That ATC was joking around on his cell phone with his girlfriend as the collision occurred.

This so called story makes my head hurt. Almost forgot there are wars going on between this and the killer whale .

OMG that guy let his kid say a sentence, everyone light your torches, GET HIM.... jesus people are stupid.

So overblown, and imo the suspension was more media blowback then anything else.

THis is not a big deal at all, simply another example of the media sensationalizing something stupid and in the process ruining the lives of an entire family for something so trivial.
Agreed

The suspension was because the dad violated FAA rules... twice. Guess the FAA didn't think it was overblown. Or the union, since they supported the suspension. The only thing stupid is bringing a child into the tower and putting him on the radio. But that situation was handled, so I doubt it will happen again any time soon.

Rules? Pffffftttt....

We don't need no stinkin rules! The ignorance of some people amazes me, at times.

Then I assume you have never gone over the speed limit or not come to a complete stop at a stop sign or not double parked even for a moment?

While I certainly am not calling for a national ATC take your kid to work day, I think people are blowing this way out of proportion. ATC's know how important their job is (especially at JFK) and I have no doubt that the ATC allowed his kid to say something only when it was absolutely safe.

So why isn't this pilot being reprimanded, suspended, and blasted in the media when his/her actions actually caused injury and narrowly averted the deaths of many people?

I have. And on the occasions when I was caught, I took my punishment. I didn't try to elicit sympathy from anyone.

Just like the one conversing on the cellphone with his girlfriend. How many people died again? The rules are there for a reason.

But what about all the times you weren't caught? For someone who is a stickler on rules and the fact there is a reason for them, it seems a bit hypocritical to continue to break them, no? Or perhaps you use your best judgement as to when it is safe to break them.

There is a difference between someone doing their job and in addition asking a child to repeat a command they would have said anyway, and someone ignoring his job while talking to a GF.

Because it's not a good news story, much more interesting to talk about a kid who did nothing and blow it up way way high so that everyone can be glued to the TV set watching the reports on the news

Wow, your only response is to call me a hypocrite? I guess if you can't defend a fools decision to bring a child into a high stress environment, possibly interfering with his response time and others in the tower in a job where second(s) count, I guess that works.

What would that difference be? Are you in the habit of leaving 8 year olds to their own devices during the day? Who was watching the kid when he wasn't doing his dad's job?
