My guess is that you won't be listening to anything after a static spark damages your PS3

I stick with the canned air as well.

not sure how you will get static spark from a vacuum, sucking vs blowing - whats the difference (ok no jokes!!) most vacuums today are 90% plastic which dont conduct static or electricity... and every hose I've seen on vacuums of the last 10 years are rubber or plastic too, non-conductive. Ive been vacuuming my PC for years and years, even opened up to vacuum inside and never an issue. I would fear an air can will just lodge the dust and junk worse into the system.

interesting to hear that some people have loud systems. my ps3 is and always has been whisper quiet during movie playback and gaming. if it wasn't for the blue light on the front i wouldn't even know that it was on

edit: i have a 60GB ps3 that is about 1.5 years old.

viable pro-vacuum sources 2 - 0 dimwitted "what i do is better because i do it" pro-compressed air can posts.

i'm willing to admit the air can is better for the PS3, but i need some proof, the manual on the PS3 says to avoid air cans, and i don't see how vacuums create static...

i don't own a hand vaccuum, and i have a shitload of air cans.
i'd rather be able to use what i already have... anyway, i guess i'll do my own research.

brb w/ answers.

edit;

after some research, it's pretty unanimous, the vacuum static myth is nothing but.
i've actually learned the initial burst from a can of compressed air can hold more static than any given PVC or "unground" vacuum, along w/ possible moisture which can even cause physical damage to a circuit board.

it is the dust particles moving at great speeds that may create the static that CAN harm your electronic toys.

imma use a vacuum(like the manual says to), u guys can keep pushing your dust around.

the fact is some launch consoles are noisy, by no means jet-engine Xbox 360 noisy, but noticable fan noise nonetheless.
mine is such a console, i can distinguish 3 fan speeds.
i'm a bit annoyed when someone essentially accuses me of not taking care of my PS3 because of this.
the fact is my PS3 is one of the "noisy" ones, different factory lines used different fans which may have contributed to noise discrepancies (15 blade fan, 19 blade fan) and maybe you live in a region that got it's shipments from one factory and i live in a region that got it's shipments from another, or maybe my hearing is just more acute than yours.
just because your PS3 is silent don't assume they all should be and if they're not they're being mistreated.
my PS3 has no problems, i take care of it, it's in an open space, but it also kicks into high gear often when f@h.

You said your new PS3 was a used model. Do you know how old it is? There were some defective units with "whining" in canada with serial numbers in the CE133190xxx and CE133212xxx series. It doesn't solve your problem, but it helps narrow down possible issues. If that helps at all.

I have a launch 60gb ps3 and have the same issue the op has. Intermittently during blu-ray viewing the fan will go into high gear. I don't notice it during gaming. Still the best money I have ever spent.

Checked it out at his home or yours? Different ambient temps can affect it quite a bit.
