when it comes to audio settings make sure you set it the Linear PCM so you can get lossless audio (PS3 Fat)

Just got Avatar from Amazon. Amazing one day delivery with standard shipping.

Since a DVD came with it, I popped it into my PS3 first to see what upscaling would do for it. I watched for a few minutes. My palms became sweaty, my eyes began to water and my hands were shaking. Before I had the chance to hit eject, my PS3 made a derisive noise and spit it out on the floor. Apparently it likes it steady diet of Blu-rays.

Hands trembling, I inserted the BD. Woo-Hoo! Thats more like it! PS3 made a few contented sounds and now I have to get back to the movie.

PQ is incredibly crisp and clear. I'm wondering if the Cameron-Pace 3D fusion camera somehow improves the 2D video as well.

As I understand it it's just two 1080p Sony cameras rigged up in a stereoscopic configuration. They use same/similar ones on many TV shows like Dexter and The Office, and movies like Sin City.

Is that on the Blu only, or did you hear it in the theater? I may have to buy the disk.

I've posted on this before, but even though many films have impressive dynamics, and many have had plenty of bass since the THX, Dolby and DTS people started revising the configuration a couple of decades back, I have never heard truly wide dynamics in an IMAX theater. Some of the older 70 mm films had dynamics that were truly overwhelming (the ships crashing, the thunder/earthquake in Ben-Hur, even the shrieking in the 70 mm blow-ups (with their higher potential soundtracks) of ETor Alien

This is definitely my new favorite Blu-Ray. It feels a tad small on my 32" LCD compared to seeing it in IMAX 3D., though.

Can you tell us how far apart the centers of the lenses are? There was a rumor that, for the old 3D of the '50s & 60's, as well as in some modern instances, the centers were much farther apart than the average for human eyes, and this is what gave those 3D movies exaggerated depth, the appearence of widly separated planes -- rather than truly rounded objects -- and eye fatigue. I think one critic (was it Arthur Knight??) said the separation was equivalent to that of an obese gorrilla, rather than a human. AVATAR looked a little more convincing in this regard, so I'm wondering.

Here's an interesting little video on the cameras they used that addresses that issue at some point:

I think you need a dictionary; being one does not have to correlate to the other. 'masterpiece' is a far more subjective term that can be easily argued either way, 'phenomenon' is less hard to argue with.

It's a lot more complicated then that, they did a lot of the work on the lenses etc, to optimize them for 3d.

Well 70mm with some slight dnr has no noticable grain and is innfenatly more detailed then anything in avatar.

That is a long way away. Movies are only edited at 2k in any case. So the difference isn't that great (imax scenes have been edited at 4k).

Incidentally, if you think digital capture is the magic solution to all your film-related PQ issues, check out Public Enemies, i believe it was shot mostly on the same cameras
Bottom line, when you spend $300 million to make a great-looking film, it doesn't really matter what you shoot it on. Especially if 70% of it is completely CG.

Agreed, I like both digital cameras and film and hope both are around for a long while to come.
