To tell you the truth....I never considered going the DIY passive route for several reasons.......

1) I don't have the skill set for such an endeavor (failed shop class )

2) I only have one channel of 150+w @ 4 ohms of amplification available to me

3) The finished product would have to be in a huge cabinet to reach the lowest octaves ( and I don't have the space)

4) It's just easier to purchase a powered one with an all important warranty

Good Morning Russ,my Friend.
Hope you have a good day ahead of you.

If you go to Parts Express they have a large variety of Pre Made Subs that some offer incredible Low End Performance.

Big Daddy and cB can both vouch for their performance ability. And they also have sub kits from every range. From supplying just basic components and you providing almost all the work.To some that are nothing more then you connecting a couple of wires and a couple of screws.

All Sizes,Level of Bass Output, and Quality of Subs are covered. Its a very attractive route depending on how much you can do.Also provides a lot of Bass for the Buck.

But in your situation(As you so wonderfully broke it down and explained it )
Buying one ready to go is a Great Option Also. And they have those as well.

So any time you want to look for things dont forget Parts Express.
They have a Huge Catalog full of everything you could ever think of.It says $6.00 on the cover. But if you visit their site, its FREE.Just supply your mailing info and they had mine here in just a couple of weeks(And even paid shipping)And also send you a sales catalog they have every month or two.

They just had(and may still have a Philips Line Conditioner for @$56.00).Which is an amazing price for all the features it has and the level of Power Conditioning and Protection to co-axial,phone line, ethernet line, and multi AC Outlets it covers.

Hey Todd,

It's funny you've mentioned them (Parts Express) as I have just purchased Dayton speaker cable from that site. I'm still breaking the cable in (if there's such a thing),but overall I'm happy with my purchase(I plan on buying the matching cable for my rears). As far as the passive sub goes, that may be a project for me in the far future(I exist on modest means). And I don't know if a passive sub would give me cleaner/deeper bass than a powered unit. I'll have to do some more investigation.

Russ it seems that I have been running into a few other members who have been using the Dayton Cables.Speaker,HDMI,IC's,and other cable types.

And yes I can understand about breaking cables in.I do(personally)think cables can make a difference in the sound and performance of a system.

A New Center Cable ,as well as some side and rear cables are on my list of items to be purchased soon.
I just dont think the cable I am using now will be as effective as I want with adding these amps. So,I will give a look into the Dayton Cables.
I appreciate you bringing that up,my Friend.

But I have a 10 inch Heavy Duty Woofer and a 100 watt rated(200 watt peak)Plate Amp for a Powered Sub with the Crossover Settings, input levels, phase switch and LFE,low inputs, and speaker inputs. So I am planning on using them with a pre-made box for a 10 inch sub woofer.

Croseiv,

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm quite happy with the sound but want to see what the lowest octaves have to offer Hence the search for a dedicated sub.

Hiya Russ.

Have you considered a Sunfire HRS-12 ? If you want deep, accurate bass at extremely good value, then the Sunfires are up there with the best.

Hey it's been along time

I didn't think you ventured around these parts anymore Thanks for the food for thought. I'll do some investigation on them shortly. BTW, Why are you suggesting them? Have you had any personal experience with them?

Hello Russ.

I agree! It's good to see The Force on the sight!

I have a friend who has a Sunfire HRS-12 and it's potent! He has it augmenting an Energy Veritas Surround package. Oh, it's quite impressive.
With a Frequency Response of 16-100Hz and an SPL of 108 dB's, I think it competes with the SVS. It has a pretty small foot print and it's very attractive.
The $672 price tag ain't bad either!
I watched Wolverine on his system and I have to tell you, the helicopter scene was intense! I really felt the "Boom" in the alley scene when Gambit hit the ground with his staff! Yeah Russ, it's a nice sub!

Oh yeah, one more thinkg...... when it comes to music playback, that is truly where the Sunfire excels! The bass is accurate, tight and precise.

Rythmik subs get good reviews - very musical, sealed, servo. I'm going to build two using their 15" kits which are under $600 each. I can build both cabinets for $100 unless I decide to get fancy. Can't see fancy in the dark.

Thanks for the additional info..... I'll look into it. Seems like more research is warranted
