I'm not set up for Atmos or DTS:X yet, but the core TrueHD mix was stellar anyway.

Do you at least have decoding capabilities for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio?

I skipped this at the cinema due to the crappy reviews and I wish I hadn't. It's no narrative masterpiece for sure but the images are dazzling and the action sequences are consistently inventive. It was certainly no worse than the majority of popcorn movies, most of which have no merit at all.

Seems like most years there's one big movie that undeservedly gets it in the neck; but then I loved TOMORROWLAND and JOHN CARTER OF MARS too.

Indeed; it was no masterpiece -- and the reviews, right out of the gate, just like with Batman v Superman, shit all over the narrative and made Damon into some kind of "punk hack" for taking this role; whatever -- but it did entertain as a CGI-loaded monster fest, right along the lines of Clash of the Titans or Gods of Egypt.

I didn't like it as much as you guys, but it's definitely a solid action movie. I think reviews are sooooo political now that Damon leading a Chinese cast was a sore spot for a lot of reviewers. Kind of like how Zack Snyder's supposedly not good enough politics lead to some of the hate he gets. Not getting political, just saying people are TOO political right now. I really do think it has an effect.

In BvS' case you also have the same thing Assassin's Creed dealt with, which was reviewers being mad they made such a serious movie out of such "childish" material.

I think it's a decent fantasy movie, nothing groundbreaking, but a fun watch, not Yimou Zhang's best

I don't know if it's just me, but the main actress looked like a final fantasy cg character at times

I don't remember it being an issue when christian bale starred in Flowers of War just a few years ago, it's just a trendy now to be a white savior (the irony)

Just finished watching this. On the overall level I really dug it. It did feel line the film was trimmed down some. At times it was disjointed. CGI was rough but I seen worse. I like that Matt played it straight and seeing The Viper from Game of Thrones was fantastic!

Is the Taiwanese 3D steelbook the ONLY release with a slipcover? I want a 3D version and I've seen the HK version advertised with a "lenticular card". Did any of the Tegion B releases receive slips? I prefer releases with a Lenti slip... less concerned whether it's an Amaray release or blu-ray but I would prefer to pay less than the $65+ price being asked for the Taiwan release. Help thanks!

It's not Yimou's better work but still a lil bit fun. 2.5/5.

He could have drawn out suspense over the creatures much longer than he did.

The European presence makes perfect sense given the historical context. Casting Damon was fine. The critiques crying racism are acting like clueless crybabies.

Also, Yimou wanted to make a film with westerners in it. But that's why I think it isn't his better work. He makes great Chinese films. Here he tried to make a western style action-get-the-monster flick. Not so good.

Also tried to add a "pining for love" side story, but it didn't have that longing his previous other films do so well.

My friend and I tried watching this (UHD) the other night and couldn't even make it 10 minutes. Gonna give it another try at some point later, at least it looked amazing.

But it doesn't look amazing. The creatures don't look as good as half the cgi in similar released titles.
Yeah, the color palette looked outstanding, but that's his thing (the director)

Didn't even get far enough to see the monsters haha, but as far the UHD looked, it was gorgeous.

I have had this sitting on my desk for a couple weeks. It's the only one in my unwatched pile. Hopefully, I will get to it in a few days.

Yeah the CG is so soft. It still looks amazing design wise though, very pretty images, but not the best technically.

Right. As soon as the creatures came on, the wife and I were like, "Wait! What? That looks a little cheesy..a little TV-quality-ish, not movie quality!"
I just assumed that the budget wasn't too large (or as large as other cgi films).

And as soon as we turned off the Blu-ray, and switched the TV input to "Cable Box", HBO or Starz was on and just happened to be playing some similar type fantasy/monster/creature film (something I never saw) and the creatures and motion (all the cgi) looked soooo much better!
