If you have the current Blu-rays, you could get them on Vudu for $2 each through D2D

Yuck!

It reminds me of some ugly artifacts in The Matrix UHD, visible both in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. I'm afraid what we're seeing here will also be present on B89 UHD.

What are we looking at exactly? and by ugly artifacts in The Matrix UHD, what do you mean? That was a glorious presentation on 4K. Only beat by a very, very small handful of films.

And how has done Batman?

It’s appears these UHD discs will be 1.85:1 instead of Warner’s usual 1.78:1 open matte. A small change, but worth noting.

On a computer/phone screen. We don't know what it looks like on UHD on our television screens where it really matters. But yes, the sky is falling.

I'm sure HDR will help with shadow detail, but even without it, the lighting and general atmosphere of the remastered cap is far superior to the older one IMO.

I kind of forget the various versions of that exchange. I believe on the old flipper DVD the WS side was different than the pan/scan
No there weren't any when they first did 5.1 in 1997. The film released in Dolby Stereo for 35mm runs, Dolby six track for the 70mm blowups from the same mix with mono surrounds. The Laserdisc (and VHS hifi) represent the 35mm version with matrixed 2.0 and sounds great. In 1997 for the original DVD they upgraded the sound to 5.1 but it is the same sound as the previous 2.0 mix so I would assume it was either upmixing that as was common on many WB discs of that era or locating the 70mm mix. In 2005 for the SE DVD they made 5.1 available in DD and DTS and while it was the same mix with the original effects it was slightly reworked in that there seemed to be some EQ applied and quite a nit of the low end and punchiness of the older releases was gone. This track was what was on the original BD as TrueHD. (The other three films followed the same process but didn't suffer from the same deficiencies on the new track)

The removal of Vicki taking the lint out of her mouth was only on the widescreen side of the 1997 flipper DVD. I guess whoever authored it thought it must be a mistake and so it was removed. It is on the flip side open matte version and every other release as it should be.

What I was trying to say is that I spent a little time bouncing back between the Atmos and 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks on the BATMAN UHD and granted I only watched the first 30 minutes. It does seem to me the 5.1 is a folddown/what have you of the Atmos track. The extra "push" you hear on the gunshots in the Atmos mix are on the 5.1 track as well. So purists who need the original mix, it's not on here.

The thing with the gunshots is that they're not all replaced, it's like they laid some new FX on top of the older ones. This is especially evident in the early warehouse scene. If you put the foreign language tracks on, you can hear the really old "whizz bang" gunshots that were straight out of a '50s western. In the Atmos mix, they're there audibly a little, but mostly buried under the new work.

Curiously, the scene where Joker offs Palance, it doesn't sound like they replaced the gunshots at all -- that old "library" gunshot effect is still there in the Atmos mix. So someone is going to have to catalogue these differences (not me! lol) because it had been years since I saw the film, and I thought the Atmos track was engaging and effective, and not out of place necessarily.

It doesn't seem like a radical, really noticeable remix like the SUPERMAN one -- yet for the folks, the purists, who want the straight original audio, it's not here.
Oh dear. You're not kidding. On that clip you can hear some of the original effects still in there as they're likely baked into the stems and couldn't be fully removed. But the new effects are really jarring most of the time and are a major downgrade as as per usual they try to modernize each sequence and serve only to remove the audience from the film entirely. '
This is bad. Now I can see why Geoff was talking about Blade Runner being remixed on the 4K release. Perhaps it's good then for my purist soul that I'm not fully 4K yet.

I do see what you're referring to in those Matrix shots, but I've not seen those on or in the movie when watching it. And I've watched the he-- out of that movie.

The color timing and teal infusion is disconcerting because while there have been many improvements here there are some downsides. It is likely the same person behind The Matrix master may have worked on these but then again MPI has been fond of teal insertion and teal highlight on many discs for all studios for several years. And while the darkness is better I don't know if it's exactly as it should be on any of the four.

I too saw a vintage gorgeous Returns print but I wouldn't say it had teal in it-more of a deep blue to white lit blue in certain scenes and sequences. However where it seems confined to highlights and background details in 89 (where it has no reason to be, marring an otherwise nice looking transfer) it seems to be all over Returns and is a step backwards.
If you look at the clips in the Face to Face music video they are directly film sourced and much bluer than anything teal. THIS is the only thing I have found that matches the gorgeous 1992 Fuji print I saw about three years ago and I must admit the shots of the new 4K transfer don't look like it at all due to the teal infusion running rampant.

I take it these are all shots of the 4K remastered BDs and that the UHD will be slightly better. What's up with that by the way? We've had BDs of 4K restorations for years and only now can studios seemingly not be able to get stuff right on the 1080p versions.

Nope. I've honestly not seen it. I have watched that movie on 4K more times than I can begin to count.

OH MAN!!! That takes me back. I remember when this video premiered on 120 Minutes. It was around the same time as The B-52's Good stuff video. I would love to have that complete show on 4K UHD. Great times.

The darkness is much better than we've ever had at least. I think it works .

Teal is blue, it's just a warmer blue that just happens to work really well with modern TV's. You can notch your picture settings in a certain direction *cough*cool color tone*cough* to get the "blue" blue's you'd personally like for this. Or you can adjust your white balance a tad to compensate(if you're brave enough haha). I find myself always slightly adjusting settings specifically for UHD's depending on the film and the way I think it should look. It only takes a few seconds before sitting down to enjoy it in full!

Fact is, the previous transfers of these movies are epic garbo any way you look at it. I've lived with them for a long time. Not happily, but they've served their purpose as a way to watch these movies for years. This is SO MUCH closer to the actual 35mm print then we've ever had, and it looks pretty damn good. and finally the quality I've been wanting (especially with Forever and B&R). But it will all depend on how it looks in person too, and your preferred settings. I'm sure this would look best via projector, just like the theater showings this month, which no one seemed to complain about a overbearing teal infusion then haha.

Viewing these in HDR, I'm sure will change perception too. Screencaps of 4K stuff have always been problematic, at least for me. Stuff usually looks 5x better on my set, with the color, clarity and HDR implementation. Even standard blu rays upscaled. It's as authentic of an experience as we've ever had, and will have for a very long time. Until 8K or whatever else is next, becomes the norm.

Returns is not perfect, no way, I'm not saying that but every time I look at these caps, I'm actually liking them more and more, and certain scenes MORE than the 35mm
