Because that's pretty much what you are doing by going to the prime time showings at movie theaters.
I would say that id pick waiting and paying 29.99 to enjoy it in my house anyday since I can pause it when I want, watch it when I want, take it to friends, watch it as many times as I want, laugh as loud as I want, or complain lol lets say I loved a movie that came out in may bought a ticket the first week but 4 weeks later I wannted to see it again because I loved it so much, here where I live tickets are $10 early $13 late so just seeing it twice is either $20-23. If I really cared about how much I paid for blu-rays I could probly beat that price on almost every movie and that doesnt even include a tiny drink once or a popcorn I don't mind people that love it lord knows I did once but not anymore lol ill take 20-34.99 on a movie any day over 30-44.99

DID YOU KNOW THERE IS NOT A SINGLE THEATRE IN SAUDI ARABIA BECAUSE IT IS ILLEGAL. THE PEOPLE THERE COMPARE THAT KIND OF BUSINESS TO PROSTITUTION. i am very confused as to why. but oh well.
because theatres are from western civilization

I agree movies theaters are not going anywhere. They will be here for a long time to stay. I don't agree that watching Blu Ray's is cheaper.
My setup cost me...
2,700 HDTV
1,500 Surround sound system
400 for PS3
25 for Blu Ray
+ Electricity cost

Thats 4,625
Not counting food at 10 dollars a movie ticket I can go to 460 movies. Thats more than 1 a day for a full year.
I understand that you pay once for the HDTV and the Surround sound but it is still a lot of money.
This is why theaters are not going any where. Most people don't have setups like this and would rather pay 20-30 bucks to take the family out for a movie once in awhile. Me personally would rather spend the money and enjoy it at my home. Thats just me though.

Theaters are going nowhere. Certainly there are agorophobics that need to stay at home, but being able to get the social aspect at home just can't be the same experience. Certainly picking the right theater at the right time can help, because seeing a movie with obnoxious dimwits is terrible, but I really am good at going to the right place at the right time. Seeing Indiana Jones on May 22 will be marketly better than on my 50" TV. Also, the big screen is the big screen. You just can't replicate that at home. This is not to say that home video does not have its extreme benefits. It does. They just compliment each other well. I just could not imagine a time when I can't leave the pool on a hot summer day and see a big, dumb popcorn movie in the air conditioned theater.

the issue I have with my local theatres is that all are staffed by barely-knowledgeable staff and the sound quality always seems to be garbage... but at the same time... you cant beat a movie on a huge screen

Here in Canada, within some ethnic communities, some theaters showing Italian, Greek, Arabic, etc. movies have closed down from dwindling attendance because of home movies - and that was with VHS when rental places became commonplace in the 80s.

Different story, different technology, different market here, but if one were to analyze, maybe something could be learned from this example.

Personally I hate going to theaters because of other people and their yap/crap. I didn't pay $20 to hear you dude...

Oh, and BTW, that crap they put on popcorn in theatres that's supposed to be "butter" is probably among the most unhealthiest (and unholiest) things you could ever put into your body that is theoretically edible...

Got kids? The theater may be the only way for some to see a movie from start to finish.

Nice idea, but it was a bummer to have had to sit in the back seat when we were kids - as we had to do when the family went to a drive-in. Got to love that rear-view mirror sitting square in the middle of the picture!

They have one in the harbour area of downtown Toronto. It's a driving range (by day) and a drive-in (at dusk).

A rather clever use of space.

Am I the only freak that wants drive-ins to come back?

Maybe its because I have a van now with kids. It could be interesting on the nights when I get a sitter too.
