Finished 42.

And starting 43.

Both with the first deserving a bonus just for that opening 12 minute scene with Drew Barrymore. Absolute master class in filmmaking right there. Wes Craven, RIP...

A slickly produced late 70s thriller, this was co-written by John Carpenter and has been described as an American giallo (a few plot points do seem to be borrowed from Death Walks at Midnight) but I found it to be not very thrilling at all. It's not that it's a bad film, it's just kind of mediocre and slow-paced, and Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones enjoy zero chemistry together (Jones looks like he's half-asleep much of the time). I feel that the set-piece visions and murders could have been executed better because they largely seem anti-climactic. I think the film could have come closer to reaching its potential in the hands of someone like Brian De Palma.

Edit: LOL - I just started reading the site review and it pretty much says the same thing about De Palma... I promise that I wasn't ripping off the reviewer when I typed that!

10/19 Sleepaway Camp (1983)

The kills are inventive, it's shot well, and the colors pop. I appreciated how even though you sympathize with Angela the bullies manage to feel human. Yes, they do terrorize her and there's no excuse for it, but they don't know the root of her silence and being ignored causes their own insecurities to rise up to the surface. The actors are good at portraying this without it needing to be said. Regrettably, the ending cheapens things by taking a rich character and having them literally snarl and act like a carnival attraction.

I am amused.

--------------------------------------------------

Night of the Living Dead

I never really appreciated this film until now. Don't really know why, but having the Criterion edition with nice, clear PQ helps a lot.

This film pushed some boundaries pretty seriously for the 60s, but it still exudes a certain level of class and a lot of tension. Truly deserving of its status as a classic.

Halloween (2018)*:

Wasn't entirely sure how this would be, but I walked away from the theater pleased. This one takes what the original did and turns it up to 11. The kills are more brutal and there is a sense of dread throughout. I wish they would have had more of a pattern for Michael's kills like the first, but I guess this was more of a psychotic Michael just killing at random. Also, some of the humor felt a little out of place, but it didn't completely take from the movie. I will say that the final showdown was done to perfection and built tension perfectly throughout.

And 44.

This one has really grown on me over the years, 2/5 back in the day, up to a four now. Fitting end to the trilogy, even if it does pale in comparison just a bit, in a "Return of the Jedi having to follow two all-time classics" kind of way. Good story, high body count, and hey, look! It's "TV's Scott Foley"... Great supporting cast here, with Foley, Patrick Dempsey, Lance Henriksen, and a cameo from somewhere far, far away.

10/10 The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
the picture of dorian.jpg
Magnificent adaptation of the classic Oscar Wilde story. The central theme is extremely thought-provoking, and this
film takes a lot of the dialogue from the original source. Hurd Hatfield's casting has grown on me, I think his
appearance and demeanor fits perfectly with the role, palpably young and with a sinister edge. Of course some things
are dated (the song and attitude of women), but it faithfully recreates the spirit of Wilde idea.

10/12 Psycho (1960)
psycho.jpg
An unmatchabale masterpiece of Hitchcock, a brilliant lesson of the audience at your will. From the iconic score to the sinister
production design, the film is a gem of the genre. Anthony Perkins is outstanding in one of the most complex villains in
film history. The audacious filmmaking still feels fresh, and of course the shower scene is one of the greatest of all time.

10/14 Romina (2018)
romina.jpg
Awful slasher film with all the familiar tropes of the subgenre, but without a wiff of imagination. To do an homage of classic horror
is one thing, but to blatantly imitate is lazy and sloppy. A mishmash of Friday the 13th and I Spit On Your Grave, this mess is boring,
predictable and ultimately infuriating. The rape scene is one of the most unrealistic I've seen, and even at only 80 minutes, it feels
much longer.

10/17 The Wolfman (2010)
wolfman.jpg
I've always enjoyed this film, the atmosphere is great and it genuinely feels like a Universal monster movie.
The crew is impressive:Rick Baker, Milena Canonero, Walter Murch, Danny Elfman. Acting is irregular but enjoyable,
and the tragedy of the cursed family is really felt. The romance is nicely presented and the amped violence is suitable
for the material.

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) After the discovery a fossil belonging to a strange creature, a group of scientist head down to South America to find out its true origins. That Gill-Man design is always a real treat to watch.

This one I can appreciate for how well made and off-beat it was with excellent performances but ultimately it wasn't my cup of tea. I never really got what it was going for at any point nor did I understand it fully. It was just one of those movies where I was like "huh"? If anyone has any insight it'd be much appreciated since I'm usually not one to be this dense but I have no idea or really only a vague idea what the film was going for...

Broken Lizard's Club Dread Fantastic tribute to '80s slasher films, both good and bad. The performances are all great, especially Bill Paxton as Coconut Pete. The movie is very funny, and fairly suspenseful too. Blu-ray, please and thank you.

The Faculty Teenagers using guns? A high school student/drug dealer's homemade scat saves the day, and then he gets the girl - and she's his teacher? Yeah, this movie would never get made today. Nice homage to many sci-fi and horror films, with great creature effects by KNB.
