Default Blu-ray questions!

So right now i'm on the fence about whether or not to get a Blu-ray player, so maybe you guys can help me out with some questions? My maximum price range is probably $250 and I mostly want one to watch high def. movies and upscale my huge DVD collection.

1. My TV is a LG 42LG50 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV...which Blu player would you recommend for that TV?

2. I have a lot of Region 2 DVDs, will those play on a Region A player? Or does it have to be region free or what?

Thanks a lot for your help!

If $250 is your price range I would go with the PS3 for another $50. I cannot answer your question on the Regions though.

You may also want to look at the players from Sony and Panasonic (Sony S360 and Panasonic BD60), as both could probably be had in your $250 price range and are pretty well-regarded in that price range.

Region A players will typically be region-locked to Region 1 for DVD, so a Region 2 DVD wouldn't play.

Your region 2 DVDs will not play on a stand-alone Region A blu-ray player, or Region A PS3. You'll need a region free player for them.

As for the player, the new entry level Sony's are fine in that price range, but like the earlier poster said - you may just want to get a PS3 for a few bucks more.

you should be able to find both of those for $199.99, $50 less then your budget. I have the BD60 it is an excellent player. The PS3 is a good option if you are looking for a gaming box as well, but, goes over your budget.

Right now the market for All region Blu-Ray/DVD players is limited.

Practically, the only known player that can do that is the MOMITSU:

http://www.hkflix.com/hardware/xq/as...qx/details.htm

The player has been altered from it's original configuration so it can play Blu Rays and dvd's no matter if they are region locked or contain PAL material

It seems that the OPPO player (BDP 83,a way better one, but more expensive) can play PAL discs, but is region locked. There's a hardware modification circulating in internet by which it can be converted to Region Free, but I personally don't know if it works fine.

The only reason why you should consider any of these two options is if you plan to buy more Blu Rays from Europe or coded "B" or "C". If not, buy a good brand Blu Player (e.g. Sony or Panasonic) and get a Region free dvd player for your dvds that can do the upgrade (I strongly reccomend the OPPO DV 80-H).

I've seen posts from a few users of the BDP-83's region-free hardware mod, and they've all indicated that it works as advertised (region-free for DVD, manually region-selectable for Blu-ray) and is easy to install yourself (no soldering required). I think the mod itself runs around $80 or so, which means the BDP-83 plus the mod will cost you at least $600 once you factor in some shipping. It's an all-in-one solution, though, with excellent performance to boot...

Ok thanks for all your help! I think I will go with either the Sony or Panasonic ones that were mentioned above, I saw them at WalMart I think. Is there any way to hack them so they can play region 2 DVDs? Like how you can hack a DVD player by pressing certain remote buttons?

So I went ahead and bought the Panasonic DMP-BD601 and hooked it up to my TV with an HDMI cable. I also bought the new Wizard of Oz blu ray and it looks somewhat grainy on my TV. But when I unhook the HDMI cable and use that Video/Audio yellow, red, white, the grain's gone. How can I fix this? Shouldn't the HDMI cable give me better picture?

I know someone that has a Panasonic DMP-BD60 that made it region-free with a Panasonic remote bought from the UK. I think the remote can be found off ebay.uk, and it should only be a few dollars. It has a yellow button that you hold down for 5 seconds, and it allows the player to play all dvd movies. I have been thinking of getting this player. I'll see if I can find out more about the remote. It will still be locked to Region A though for blu-ray movies.

HDMI is going to be the best pq. Not sure what to tell you here.

Make sure your player is out putting a 1080p signal through the HDMI cable. The yellow cable will give you a 480i signal only.

Component video is a red, blue, and green cable. you need to set the Hdmi to 1080p not component video

in your setup menu set player to output through Hdmi and on your remote you should have a resolution button that you can press to swith through all your resolution from 480i to 1080p/24

when you hit the resolution button on your remote does it change the picture on your tv and on front display of player it should say what resolution it is switching to.
Also if you hit display on your tv's remote it should show what resolution your tv is receiving from blu-ray player
