Default Wait for the Denon or get the PS3

Okay I admit it, this is probably a loaded question. I haven't bought a Blu-ray player yet. I've always been a big fan of Denon products I own a Denon DVD player and reciever and I am hoping to hear of a Denon release soon.

Or does the PS3 do everything I would need it do as a Blu-Ray player. My understanding is that the PS2 wasn't a great DVD player, but I'm glad to hear that the PS3 is doing great for Blu-Ray.

Can the PS3 connect via Component? My TV is a second or third generation projection HDTV before the days of HDMI. How is the image via component?

I'm leaning toward the PS3 because I also have two PS2 games that I could play with it. But I am a movie guy and only an occasional gamer. But the ability to play games on a high quality Blu-Ray player is very tempting.

But since I am primarily interested in movies, should I focus on a BD player that is movies only, or should I be pleased with the PS3?

Plus what are the wait times on the PS3? Any known bugs out there?

Thanks for any opinions!

the ps2 sucked as a dvd player since it wasnt sonys focus as a real movie player as well as a gaming maching since they couldnt compete with dvd players already on the market. With the PS3, they are focusing on it just as much as a gaming machine since Blu Ray (their baby and as is mine!) is a brand new format. The ps3 rocks as player. Get it...plus u can do so much more as well.....

I'm really enjoying my PS3 as my Blu-ray player. I use the HDMI connection but you can connect to component as well. I'm a "sometimes" gamer also, and focus mainly on the movies. I've had no problems with the PS3 as my BD player, and my urges to purchase a stand-alone have dropped away as I look at prices and think, but this one plays games too! If you're looking to save even more money and can wait, I have a feeling it's going to be a very Merry Christmas for Blu-ray.

Yeah as an infrequent gamer I've always pretty much played Madden and the college games.

I'm also thinking about Christmas time as well. I'm hoping stand alones will be around $300, which is the price level at which I broke into the original DVD market.

I am a big Denon fan myself. I have the AVR-4806, but it doesn't support HDMI 1.3, so I have my PS3 plugged directly into my 1080P TV with an optical cable going to the receiver. IMO, the PS3 is a great player, BD and DVD's in 1080P is awesome, so get a PS3.

Well, since I have a PS3 I would obiously say go with it. One thing to consider though: the fan can get annoying if you're sensible to noise. A standalone would probably be quieter. But other than that it is a great BD player.

Hmm, I never really even hear the fan on the PS3, well when compared to the 360, which is annoyingly loud.

But considering that I watch movies at full blast anyways, I don't even hear the 360 fan, let alone the PS3 fan.

Personally I don't go 'full blast' most of the times. And the fan is only noticeable during quiet scenes (talking and no music), but it's there. It's not bad, but I think good to know if you're in the middle of deciding what to get.

You should really use the PS3's HDMI connection for both video and audio. The PS3 converts Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD to uncompressed PCM automatically, so you don't need HDMI 1.3 to get the best possible sound quality if you've got a PS3. The Denon AVR-4806 accepts linear PCM 7.1 thru HDMI, this is really the optimal connection. If you use the optical connection, you're limited to 5.1 sound. Another disadvantage to the optical connection is you can't use SACDS. Only with HDMI will you get 5.1 SACD sound.

The PS3 uses a Bluetooth remote, so you won't be able to control it with a Harmony remote. The Sony Bluetooth remote is very good, however.

What do you mean by a Harmony remote? I use a Sony universal remote. The PS3 would only work with its own remote?

Any Denon Blu player will be too expensive. Get the PS3.

Yes, it's Bluetooth and not IR, so the PS3 only works with the dedicated Bluetooth remote.

Unless you want a USB IR solution plugged into the front which looks bad. Sony should have put a least one USB port on the back!

If you want to wait a couple of weeks until the 80GB model comes out, its fan noise may well be less then that of the the 60GB mode (not that that model's fan noise is objectionable to me -- but maybe I'm just not "sensitive"). Sony does believe in continuous improvement in its products and takes customer feedback in determining what to improve.

I for one am absolutely content with my BD remote, but for those who prefer an IR solution, this might be the way to go:
