Default Replacement PS3 question

I recently had to exchange my PS3 due to a drive issue. I believe you can have 5 PS3s registered to one name, does this mean the replacement is #2? Or is the fact that I swapped PS3s good enough to keep the count at 1?

Thanks in advance

I believe that it counts as #2. However, if it ever comes down to a conflict situation, Sony will have your replacement/repair on file. Therefore, a quick call to customer service should be able to rectify the account usage situation.

If it is a big deal (or you think it might be in the future) call up Sony and tell them the situation and have the original deactivated from your account.

Really? How legit is the chance that this can happen?

You have to actually deactivate your PS3 system. If it's broken and you can't, try calling Sony to ask them to do it for you.

If you don't plan on buying another 4 PS3's, then it doesn't really matter if it takes up 1 of your 5 spots I suppose

How does the fact that I don't have my original PS3 come into play?

Even if it's "gone", if you didn't deactivate your account on it before getting rid of it, it's still considered an active PS3 on your account and thus counts as 1 of your 5.

How legit is what? That if you ask Sony to deactivate your old PS3 they will? Either call them up or just don't worry about it.

One last question, I have multiple PS3s in the house with my account activated on them, how does it work that the correct account is deactivated?

You're not deactivating a PSN account, you're deactivating the PS3 from your PSN account. If you have multiple primary accounts on a system, just log on with whatever account you're referring to, then deactivate the PS3 from there. That will remove that PS3 from the list of 5 PS3's your account is linked to.
Every other account on that PS3 will remain unchanged UNLESS you created "slave" accounts (I can't remember what they're called...you'll know if you did this though).

OK, I follow this, but I don't have the PS3 that I'm trying to deactivate. It was exchanged and I didn't deactivate before I gave it up. Honestly, I didn't know of deactivation til I read the info here. That's why I asked how does Sony know which PS3 to change.

I don't know if they can/will even do it for you. You'll have to contact them to find out.

If you formatted your hard drive (I hope you did, the store/factory probably did if you returned it there) before giving it back, or if the PS3 is broken then it's not really a big deal if it stays "activated". Assuming you never buy 5+ PS3 systems or you don't game share you won't run into problems.

I had swapped drives, so when I returned it, I had put the original drive back in, so it'll get formatted regardless.

Like I said, I have multiple PS3s, so I don't want one of my 5 slots taken unnecessarily. That's why I'm extremely curious as to how they differentiate between systems.

MAC address?

If you're very curious just call them. It's free! I'd imagine it's by serial number though.

If it were possible and they accidentally deactivated your current system it wouldn't do anything...you'd just have to re-activate it again.
