Taiwan A very good action movie "Shadowless Sword" released on Mar 5, 2010

There is a very good action movie "Shadowless Sword" released in Taiwan, it's region A, it comes with english subtitle but no english audio.
The movie was directed by the team who direct "Lord of the Rings", a very nice movie.

I've been real skeptical about buying Taiwan releases. They've got a lot of Korean movies released, but I've heard the quality is somewhat lackluster sometimes and sometimes even the aspect ratio. I've even heard that some of the films were cut. I just don't like what I'm hearing from them.

I just checked JSDVD, this blu-ray shadowless sword is not on the shelf yet, however I have decided to buy a copy. Once I got it, I will post my review if there is anyone would be interested. My friend bought a germany version of shadowless sword, however it's region B locked, it seems to have some problem to play the video
well on PS3 (region A) after removing its region limit. The video is encoded with vc1, I am not sure what it might be to cause the video issue. Anyway, this taiwanese release is region A, I think it should be no problem to playback well on PS3 (region A).

This was a joint production between New Line Cinema and Taewon Entertainment, thus that blurb.

Germany version is released by Spledid
It's region B locked.
Screen: 1920 x 1080p24 / 2.35:1
Video: VC1
Audio: German / DTS-HD 5.1
Korean / DTS-HD 5.1

Taiwanese version is released by BitWel
Region A is ok.
Screen: 1920 x 1080p24 / 2.35:1
Video: AVC
Audio: Korean / LPCM 5.1
Korean / Dolby Digital 5.1

The two blu-rays, both video quality seems good, there is no too much quality difference on video.
About the audio, there is no too much quality difference on DTS-HD 5.1 vs LPCM 5.1 for the korean language.
About subtitles, taiwanese version comes with english subtitle and
germany version is lack of english subtitle.

That's surprising given the lack of video quality on all the other Korean films released by BitWel. I have the German Blu-ray and therefore did not get the Taiwan release. The German release looks great, so if the Taiwan release matches the German one, this would be the first true high def Korean Blu-ray from BitWel.

I think this Taiwanese release "shadowless sword" is very good, especially it's cheap. Probably, it's cheaper than the DVD version. So, I recommend this Taiwanese version is a must to buy. The trailer on this blu-ray is "death trance", the video quality is good, the action is ok, so I might consider to buy this "death trance" blu-ray title.
By the way, how do you make the region B locked Germany version "shadowless sword" blu-ray disc play well on region A machine?

I have both region free Oppo BPD83, region free LG BH200, and region free HTPC with Power DVD. So it's not a problem for me.

You can buy a region free kit on eBay for ~$75. It's very easy to install and can be removed if needed. It does not interfere with firmware upgrades.

I checked out a few scenes from the movie. In general, the PQ is indeed very nice & it's a worthy upgrade from the DVD. I'd say clarity is much improved, colors are better & the print is cleaner.

For night/dark scenes, images would be grainy in certain areas. There's edge enhancement & DNR problem but for me it won't distract my viewing experience.

Hey, I've been looking for this on blu ray with Eng subs. Thanks for sharing your info.

I live in the USA, where is a good reliable place where I can buy the version you have.

The taiwanese version does have english subtitle, I ordered from JSDVD, you can order it from JSDVD. xradman is a blu-ray lover and movie expert, he ordered lots of blu-ray from JSDVD (dvd.jsdvd.com) , and make the average cost to be around $11 (lower than my cost).
I guess he ordered 10 to 12 blu-ray at one time.

Another site you can consider is YESASIA (http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html) , the shipping cost is included!

So you can check what would be cheapest way for you.

Nice review as always. For me tho, Shadowless Sword was a HUGE letdown. it rips off every movie from Crouching Tiger, Flying Daggers, Hero, LOTR, Braveheart...nothing wrong with that...The movie opens quite strong but then ends so disaterously. I thought wirework and editing of fights were cheesy as heck. I'll admit there's some genuine talent behind the scenes (production design, art direction, CGI) but other than that, I thought the movie just plain sucked.
