Default Dario Argento and other similar movies...

Ok couple of things I was wondering.. I just bougt and watched the bird with the crystal plumage. The audio was set to English, and there were english subs... I'm assuming it was dubbed, as in it is originally in English? and the subtitles were very noticably different then the audio... what do fans of these kind of movies say is more accurate (in some parts, it was to te point where the subs contradicted what was being said)

and also, what other argento movies are on blu-ray... I thought this one was pretty good, but i know it was his first movie, so im curious to see what else he did...i know stenhal syndrome is on blu, but what else is there...i was briefly looking up some of is on imdb, and i really want to see something called something like "the inferno", and there was another one with whiches involved... basically what argento movies can you recommend (preferably ones that are on blu)..and theres a few other italian directors always mentioned in the same breath as argento. do they have any worthwhile films? im a huge horror fan, and im trying out new stuff....

Most if not all Argento is done in Italian except his half of Two Evil Eyes.
As of now in US we have-
-Bird with the Crystal Plumage
-Two Evil Eyes
-The Stendhal Syndrome
There is talks of Suspiria being ready for blu release sometime in the near future. I am hoping Blue Underground gets going on releasing-Deep Red, Tenebre, and Inferno.

Don't forget about Lucio Fulci.

I would set the audio back to Italian, and watch it with English subs.... it was filmed in Italian.....

Excellent movie by the way.

Actually, most of Argento's films were shot without sound at all, and all dialog was dubbed over afterward. This was standard practice in lots of European countries for filming. Watch the actors speaking in Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, Phenomena; some are speaking Italian and some are speaking English, none of which was recorded during production.

You can pick the track you like the sound of best, as far as I know it was all as the director had intended.

Actually most Italian films, especially those in the "Euro-horror" genre have no original language since they were geared for international release. They often did not even film the live sound and usually did all of the dialogue later on an ADR stage.

On top of that since they had the international market in mind they would usually have an international cast so "Actor A" would have an American audience, "Actor B" would have an Italian audience, etc, etc. To complicate things further since they usually had actors of several different nationalities on the set, a lot of the time they all spoke several different languages, even while filming. "Actor A" would simply wait for "Actor B" to pause and end his line before speaking his. They would then dub in the language tracks in post.

If you pay close attention to the language tracks you will notice that some actor’s lips match.

EDIT: I'm a slow typer, V180 beat me to it!

i love Argentos films althoug aside from Bird With the Crystal Plumage none of my favorites of his are on blu. Suspiria, Tenebre, Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Opera, and Phenomena are the best. Lucio Fulci is often compared to Argento and so far his New York Ripper is on bd and City of the Living Dead is coming very soon.

other great similar italian horror directors (though not with any bluray releases yet) are Mario Bava, Lamberto Bava, Sergio Martino, Michele Soavi, and a few others im sure im forgetting

Opera was my favorite movie that he did. Suspira and Deep Red are really good, too.

As far as Italian horror films go, my favorite was one called Cemetery Man by a Argento protege maked Michele Soavi. It's an existential film wrapped in horror and dark comedy. Really fantastic. I doubt it will ever see a Blu-ray release as it took forever for a domestic DVD release and is now out of print.

literally heard of cemetery man this week and it's next on my list to buy. It sounded really good. Ironically in my movie book all of argentos flix but like suspiria got like really poor reviews- for most other movies it's very accurate, bit I was shocked that based on all the good things I've been hearing they were all like 2 out of 5...are there any other good Italian flicks from other directors in particular?

Lamberto Bava's movie Demons is amazing.
aside from Cemetery Man Michele Soavi has another great movie called Stage Fright.

also dont worry about any review in a book, these arent movies for the general movie watching public. if you enjoy italian horror movies, everything mentioned is the cream of the crop.

Argento's films start feeling repetitive after a while. I can see where a reviewer would give them poor reviews.

Soavi also did The Church, which was supposed to be Demons 3. I liked it more than Stage Fright, which was your standard slasher fare.

yeah i have The Church it just never really stuck with me like Stage Fright. the medieval prologue in the Church was always creepy to me i dont know why. i love the movie i just like Stage Fright more.
ill also add some titles by Mario Bava, as without him most of these movies wouldnt exist. The essentials to me are Blood and Black Lace, Twitch of the Death Nerve aka Bay of Blood, Black Sunday, Baron Blood, and Kill Baby Kill. and he has a great cheesy sci-fi movie called Planet of the Vampires which i could see people not liking but ive always loved, theres some elements that you can tell were an influence on Alien.
if you want to check out other euro horror films one of my favorites is The Grapes of Death, great french horror movie.

So many great movies mentioned here!!! Want'em all on Blu-ray!

Soavi's Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man) is the best zombie movie ever made! Done deal.

Dellamorte Dellamore (or *cough* Cemetary Man) is a genre masterpiece. I expect to see it appear on blu ray.

The far earlier Italian dvd (which had an English track) had a better print, so I would expect to see it from Italy first.

Stage Fright & The Church are also good 7/10-ish stylised films. Despite bizarre favourable reviews, the Sect however, is an absolute stinker. An almost complete mis-fire.

Harking back to the actual thread query...

Similar to Argento movies also on blu ray? Hmmm. The New York Ripper giallo by Fulci is probably your best bet.
