Hello everyone,
This topic probably seems a bit "noobish" but that is really not the case. I own an LCD tv, grandparents own a Plasma, both are badass. My only exposure to projections has been at my uncles, and a friends. My uncle has a 42 inch hitachi projection. The friend also has a Hitachi but I think it's 50 inches. Anyways, I felt like both of these tv's pretty much sucked a$$. I watched high-def cable on both and neither really looked good, certainly not as good as HD shows or movies look on my LCD tv. I was just wondering if all projections tv's suck this bad or if it's just the Hitachi brand. just wondering.... |

they are probably crt projectors. New ones out are DLP or LCoS and with samsung new projector the bulb will last a person about 15 years. Most projectors out now have incredible pictues, and also some samsungs can do 3D.

Um are you talking about projectors (as in things that hang from the ceiling and blast a beam of light onto a screen)? Thats what I think of when someone says "projector" anyway.
I was referring to a "projection HDTV". Usually a huge size TV that is not flat like an LCD or Plasma and is very heavy. I was just wondering if what I have seen with those is related to the type of TV (i.e. all projections suck) or if its just the brand (i.e. Hitachi sucks). thanks for any insight |

mitsu projectors now days aren't good at all.
The sony ones ussually have better PQ and clarity, contrast But the samsung ones are generally brighter which can be a plus if the PTV is going into a somewhat well lit room. If its a darkened basement Home theater room, then of course the sony will be plenty bright. |

I have a 55" Sony and I love it!! It suits my needs. I was going to get an LCD flatpanel (y not right?) But I could not pass up the stupid deal I got on the TV. Very happy with my purchase. Football in HD has to be my favorite thing to watch right now!

I find I prefer the color reproduction of a DLP over LCD.. When it comes to dollar per inch DLP wins hands down. I prefer the current gen Samsungs over the rest.. Sony's are goos but usually very costly.

Ah....well that's good to hear. I guess Hitachi just sucks then. People think they're getting a great deal when they get a 50 inch tv that says it's Hd for like $1000 or so, but it is so freakin crappy they might as well just stick to their 27 inch standard def tv. It's good to know there are some good projection tv's out there. Watching on a 60 inch would definitely be sweet.

I have a mitsu 55" from 2003 and it looks great, I enjoy both Sat HD and Bluray .
I also own a flat LCD samsung and in addition I've been looking at the larger flatpanels on display at stores and malls with HD video and they don't impress me yet. The flatpanels give a cartoonish look to both film and tv feeds. I'd have to say that I will hold on to my rear projection mitsu as long as I can. |

I have compared my Sammy to many other LCD and Plasmas that my friends own and I think mine stacks up VERY favorably. I did a LOT (over a year) of research before I bought my TV. I decided early on that DLP was the way I wanted to go since I wanted to go big and once I decided that Sammy's came to the front of the pack. I play games and watch movies all the time and the TV is equally adept at both.

Check out the Sony SXRD line. No screen door effect, no rainbows.

I have a 57" Sony rear projection and it is pretty nice. I prefer it to LCD's, but I'd imagine a good DLP would probably beat my TV. I had to chose between this and a Toshiba (back before the whole format war). Well the Toshiba was only 53" and was $200 less, but it also lacked any DVI/HDMI inputs. So, luckily, I picked the Sony and love it. The only thing I don't love are the little shaddows you get from a lot of rear projection. But the deep blacks are a major improvement over a lot of LCD TV's.

We own a 53" Sony rear projection for about 4 -5 years now and I am still pretty happy with it. Some of our friends use LCDs, but I think that the color depth just doesnt look right on them. I have seen one DLP in action, which by far has the best picture quality I have seen, but the price stamp of $4500 makes me love our Sony even more.
No trouble with burn in (knock on wood)... the only downside it does not have any hdmi inputs. |

For a little over $100 you can get the HDfury and convert HDMI into RGB assuming it has RGBVH inputs. Technically the HDFury converts DVI into RGB but if you use a HDMI to DVI cable you get HDMI Video input that way at least. |

The current rear projection sets using DLP, Lcos (Sony SXRD, JVC H-IDLA) are excellent.
I'm amazed at my brother-in-law's 60" SXRD Sony. These are definitely not the old crappy pictures that you used to get on the tube based rear projection sets. They are extremely tempting when compared to the prices you pay for an LCD or Plasma set. |
