Default help setting the crossover frequency

ok so i have had my new Denon 3808 for a few days now and have started messing with all the options in the menus, this is my first AV reciever so it is a little confusing to me... what should i set the crossover frequency too?

i have a 5.1 set up, floorstanding fronts, bookshelf rears. all speakers are set to 80hz at the moment including the sub, does this sound right? how are you guys set up and why?

thanks for the insight

80Hz for each speaker sounds about what THX settings would do for you...

80Hz is the lowest frequency that is allowed to pass through your speakers. (theoretically)

bass ranges roughly from around 20-200Hz...so what the settings mean are that your speakers are handling some bass (80Hz+), but just not the deepest bass. Say you change the settings from 80 to 150Hz...now the lowest frequency that will come out of your speaker is 150Hz...significantly more amount off bass is blocked. This helps to prevent your speakers from playing frequencies that can actually harm the speaker. Thats why subwoofers are made to handle bass and speakers are made to play more of the higher accoustical ranges of audio (as well as handle some bass if needed).

THX has determined this set-up to be an efficient way of setting speakers for an ideal listening experience.

thank you very much, i will do some more playing tomorrow as the girlfriend has taken control of the t.v now!

wouldn't you want to set the crossover as low as possible for the sub? i thought some subs could reach as low as 20hz but i'm sure i could not set mine lower than 80hz.... i will have to check

Subwoofers work the opposite direction...the number you use is the highest frequency that will be allowed to pass out of the sub.

Speakers will use a high pass crossover, any frequency higher than the set number. Subwoofers will use a low pass crossover, playing any frequency below the set number.
