Unhappy help with reciever crossover frequency for 3300ES

Hey guys

I recently bought sony STR-DA3300ES receiver. I tried doing auto calibration for my speakers and I choosed the "front speakers reference mode" as my setup mode. I came across setting my front speakers to small (I have big tower SONY speakers) and I tried to mess with the crossover frequency but I am confused to what value should I select my front center and rear crossover frequency. I have the sub clocked at 200 Hz.
The reason I had my subwoofer setting manually at 200 hz because that what it said when doing the auto calibration in page 44 (3300es manual), I have no clue why!

The subwoofer has two dials at the back one for crossover frequency and the other for level. the manual for the sub is kinda confusing its at sony's website.

When I did the auto calibration it sat my front and rear speakers frequency to 40 Hz and my center to 130Hz!

Do you have any suggestions to what should I set my speakers crossover frequency to? some people say 80 Hz is the sweet spot

First thing I learned was not to use the auto calibration for the same reason you have now...

Your fronts you can set to 40 or 50HZ and set them to large..

Center set to 80HZ and set it to small

Rears set to 80HZ.. and set them to small

Then you should be ok..

and put the crossover knob on the sub to its max value, this lets the receiver handle the crossover, and the level knob to no more than half way.. Then you should be good to go..

Let me know how that works out for you..

I have the same receiver.. It is pretty nice..

I would set the center and rears to 90 instead of 80 because the receiver does not do a sharp cut off at the set frequency but it rolls it off and you want to avoid any possible frequency gaps. The fronts as previously suggested.

Thank you guys for the input.. Hagar ill try to use your settings and see if it is any good with my speakers.

You said that I shouldn't do auto calibration? I needed to do that so I could set my levels and speaker distance. When you do auto cal. do you set the master volume on the receiver to max and set the cross freq on the sub to max 200hz just as the booklet says on page 44 then run the test?

Default Manually setting Crossover Frequency

Hi,

I'm considering purchasing the same receiver (3300ES) and pairing it up with the KEF KHT3005 5.1 speaker kit.

From what I've read, the KEF sub doesn't have a control to select the crossover frequency - so it's left to the receiver to manage that.

I've read the Sony manual pretty thoroughly, and couldn't find a reference anywhere to how I can set the crossover frequency manually for the subwoofer.

I'd appreciate if anyone could please confirm that the 3300ES allows manually setting the crossover frequency ? A "how to do it" guide would also be handy !

Thanks !

The crossover frequency for the other speakers is the crossover for the sub.. Any frequency that is the below the crossover is output to the sub... That is why there is not a crossover setting for the sub..

Thanks for the reply.

Just so I'm clear, what you're saying that the 3300 allows you to manually set the crossover frequency individually for each of the speakers (front, centre, surround & surround back), except for the sub woofer ? So if I set a universal 100Hz for all my speakers, anything under that frequency will be output to the sub ?

Looking through the manual under the "Adjusting the Speaker setting manually" section (Pg 68 - 73), I don't see any mention of setting the crossover frequency for each of the speakers; only "Level", "Size" and "Distance" are configurable.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks.

If you go to the menu on the 3300ES.. either GUI or on the display..

Go to speaker settings and it is right after Surround Position.. you will see the crossover setting for the fronts, then center and then surrond speakers.. The surround speaker crossover is for all the surrounds.. That is if you use the display on the receiver..

If you use the GUI interface go to "settings" the last choice.. Then "speaker" then "crossover freq"... there you can set the crossover for each set of speakers... Front, Center, Surrounds..
