Default Questions About Crossover Frequency

Hi everyone. I was going through the setup menu on my Onkyo TX-SR607 last night and I noticed that all my crossover frequencies had been set to 100hz. Looking around on Google it seemed like the standard setting was 80hz. Anyone have some ideas on how I can figure out what the best settings for my system will be?

Thanks!

EDIT:

Here are the frequency responses listed from Onkyo on the speakers.

Frequency Response -
Front/Center 60 Hz–50 kHz
Surround 160 Hz–20 kHz
Surround Back 160 Hz–20 kHz
Subwoofer 25 Hz–150 Hz

what kind of speakers exactly do you have? A google search on your system didn't really show up anything.

How did you originally calibrate your speakers? Did you use a microphone type system such as Audyssey to calibrate?

100hz x-over really isn't bad. Although your reporting the frequency response can go lower, you usually don't want them to go as low as reported. Same with my system, without looking, mine is very similar. There will be a gradual roll off from the main speakers in conjunction to the subwoofer. You will get more out of your mains if the x-over isn't set to low.

There really aren't alot of people who set their speakers to the THX specification of 80 hz. You kind of need to get that idea out of your head all together.

Tell us more about the setting such as speaker size set by the receiver.

The speakers that I currently have are the ones that came with the Onkyo HT-SR800. I had originally configured all the speakers as small through the receiver. I used the Audessy setup mic when I configured them though it looks like the settings have been tweaked by other people

Default Subwoofer l Crossover Frequency Settings

Hello

I may have previously posted on this issue; perhaps not.

Regardless; a few thoughts.

Generally, 80Hz is the recognized crossover point for good subwoofer performance with 60Hz being another; however, this is with regards to real subwoofers and real loudspeakers. It is quite a long issue to go into too much detail, but this is generally the optimal range. However, given so many interrelated performance issues, as detailed to some extent here; higher crossover points might work best when everything is balanced and considered.

What are real subwoofers? Typically, they are quite expensive and quite large. The best known to me predate the availability of Home Theater Subwoofers, as generally available today, being of quality design and performance, of the High Fidelity Era, which is mostly long gone today.

Regarding subwoofers as many consider them, being Home Theater Subwoofers; the following should be understood.

1 l Rolloff Points l The 0-db rolloff point as well as the 3-db rolloff point of the loudspeakers themselves. While this information should always be provided by the speaker manufacturer; it is most likely not available on most products, which is irresponsible.

2 l Phase Adjustment l This is referring to 0-degrees to 180-degrees; it is not a reference to 0-degrees or 180-degrees, which is simply a compensation for out of phase. Tod be clear here; the proper adjustment is a continuous incremental adjustment range between the two points, while the latter is an in and out adjustment only.

3 l Sensitivity Adjustments l This is essential to the matching of levels of the subwoofers and the loudspeakers. This is commonly thought of as gain, level, volume, or any similar adjustment, which should be available on the subwoofer itself for convenience. Level matching might be included in the electronics as well; I would expect so.

4 l Room Placement l Factors including the following; The loudspeakers & subwoofers, loudspeakers to the surrounding walls, the subwoofers to the surrounding walls, the subwoofers to the floor, the direction of the subwoofer to the walls and listener - if either the ports or drivers are on the sides, and whatever escapes me at the moment.

5 l Listening Tests l Use your ears and subjective desire for the sound of the bass and other sound; it's your sound system after all, and this information is not intended for technically good sound, not to indicate otherwise.

6 l Crossover Points l This relates to both the loudspeakers and subwoofers; including available adjustment in the system electronics.

Essentially, getting the proper, or best sounding performance, including whatever subjectively might be of interest to the listener, is not specific to any of these factors alone, rather a balancing collectively of all of these factors together.

The sound quality, especially of the subwoofer itself, is the result of prolonged testing of various placement of the loudspeakers, the subwoofers, and the settings available.

Placement of the subwoofers includes what direction that the driver is facing, and how close the subwoofers are to any wall boundaries, including the floor; of course including positioning of the subwoofer and the loudspeakers for proper coherency of the collective frequencies themselves, meaning the relationship of these to each other.

In closing, no test equipment or test signals are required for setting up the loudspeakers and subwoofers; simply realizing these relationships, and devoting considerable time to experimentation, listening to your music or movies is all that is required.

While it is time consuming, the results will be quite satisfying to this task.

Anyone is capable of this endeavor.

Thank You

You need to get some better surrounds. There's a gap in sound because your surrounds don't go low enough.

DB, you should stop by the University District sometime, this bar serves one of the best burgers I've ever had.

Okay. I'll check out those links. As far as better speakers are concerned where would be a good place to start?

I would re-run Audyssey if I were you. Use all recommended placings to get the best reading.

Then post the results from Audyssey so we can see what it set your receiver and speakers at.
