Default Crossover Frequency

What is a good crossover frequency to put my front center and surround at. I have a denon 1909 with monitor 50 polk audio speakers. I want most of my base to go to my sub, I have a velodyne .

THX recommends 80 hz for all of your speakers, but it is a good bit dated. Some just add 10-20 hz from the lowest maximum frequency response to allow for roll-off. What it really comes down to is the frequency response and sweep of your speakers. Most sweeps are at +/- 2 or 3 db's. So, for your speakers, the 50's have a frequency response of 42Hz to 25kHz. It looks like the frequency sweep is +/- 3db’s. They could be set at 70Hz, but I would just set them at 80Hz to keep that much more of the lower frequencies blocked from your speakers, keeping them going to the sub instead.

I asked Polk. They said it comes down to personal preference, but their standard recommendation is to set the crossover for the Monitor 50s to 80Hz.

80 Hz is the best starting place. If you want more bass to be handled by the subwoofer you can raise it, but make sure it doesn't localize the sound. If your sub is close to the fronts this will be less of a problem. You can also go lower, but I would think your sub can handle the lower frequencies better than your polks.

Thanks alot that helped me out a ton. If you have your fronts bi amped does that at all make a difference? Also if you have your speakers set to large vs small does that mean it doesnt send any of the lows to your sub.

You'll find a lot of information on bi-amping on some other threads in the speaker section. I bi-amped mine and I didn't notice one bit of difference. So, unless you want to do it for entertainment value or to prevent extra speaker wire and banana plugs going to waste, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't think you'll notice much difference until you get separate amps involved and speakers much better than what I have.
