Default PS3 flickering on BD Movies

I have a PS3 60GB, and I think that it is a fantastic machine. I have one slight problem though, and I wonder if anyone else has noticed it.

When I play Blu-ray movies they flicker 2 or 3 times throughout the movie. Similar to VHS tracking not aligned. As I say it is only 2 or 3 times, but it annoys me. It is okay on upscaled SD DVD's.

My question is. Do I need to take it back to the store for repair, or is this normal.

Cheers

Check your cables. I had this problem a few mo. back and eventually traced it to a bad (cheap!) component video cable. Replaced it and presto.

ive had that problem with mine also when I'm playing games, never when im watching a BD though. I 'm pretty positive its because of the cheap HDMI cable i got off ebay.

The same thing happened to me, then when I took another look at the HDMI cable. The official HDMI logo wasn't on it which meant it was a knockoff. THen I got HDMI 1.2a then 1.3a for my projector. Perfect, no problems with flickering or anything.

I'm highly satisfied with what I have now.

I hate to pay the asking price for Monster Cable, but maybe I will have to bite the bullet and buy one of their HDMI cables

Check to see if you have it set to 24fps or 60 output, I believe switching this has helped some PS3 owners.

Don't. Monster Cable products are way, way overpriced.

This is the one I use. Works great. it's 1.3a but if your HDTV's HDMI input is 1.2a instead of 1.3a, you can buy 1.2a instead because they're much, much cheaper on Monoprice.com

I bought my HDMI cable at my local Comcast payment center for $12.50 no problems or flicker whatsoever. Super cheap cables can have interference or loose connections, but normal priced cables will do just as well as really expensive ones.

I have switched to 60. Will watch a movie at the weekend and see if this helps

I had the same issue, made the switch over to Monster and well worth it. Yes, they are not cheap, but the quality is there to see.

I'm using one that came with the Upconverting Oppo player, BD video flickers. Also 2 more super cheap ones at supermediastore.com, 1 for the oppo and 1 for output to TV from receiver. Is $35 from BB good enough for flicker free watching?

buying HDMI cables is a crap shoot unless they are certified 1.3. If the cable run is long, generic cables (even monoprice) falter. Running a scoped signal shows only the Monster 1000 cables maintain full signal on longer runs. Runs longer than 25 ft require repeaters as signal loss is too great.

I really don't know if Monster cables are worth the price. Last time I purchase one was a long subwoofer cable, the gold connector is loose when connected and a few pins broke off. There's humming noise also when wiggling it.

Compared to what? I also really have to question your use of "full signal", as with a digital connection like this, all you need is something that reproduces the signal with a quality good enough that the receiver can recognize whether something is a 1 or a 0. Attenuation and loss in signal strength is normal for longer cable runs. Error checking algorithms and the packet encryption ensures that if it works, it works. If it doesn't, you'll lose synch and get dropouts, not flickering.

the flickering can be caused by either sub par deinterlacing, sub par scaling normal for far too many TV sets.

when using 1080p and 1080p24 to a TV that can display these signals 1:1 you should not see flicker (unless its in the encode of the actual movie).

If any conversion is being done then it can introduce flicker, for instance 1080p24 being converted to 1080p60.
The worst offender for flicker is 1080i being converted to any other display mode, if its not done by the tv correctly (far too many dont) then your in flicker central.

Its rare the cables cause flicker, its almost always the image processing quality

And I think Digital Noise Reduction reduces noise, not flicker.
