Everyone who is a fan of the Criterion Collection and director Wes Anderson, I have something that I think could work, but first I have to say a few things:
1. Universal has a great relationship with Criterion. 2. All Anderson films have seen a Criterion release except FMF (possibly just because it was animated) 3. It's the kind of film they'd release. So, I have a plan: every Criterion fan who liked Moonrise Kingdom: On November 1st, 2012, send "suggestions@criterion.com" an e-mail asking for a release. If enough people do this, Criterion's inbox will become flooded with a bunch of e-mails asking for the same movie. |

Universal has to be willing to license them his new movies. Even though the Universal release that comes out on Tuesday is laughable in terms of special features, they still have yet to even hint about Fantastic Mr. Fox, so I'm not holding my breath that this would happen even in the next few years. Sorry to sound negative, but I'm just being honest, especially after reading how many people want to hold off on the Universal release and wait for a Criterion one.

About this, though...I don't understand...it's already getting a blu-ray release this week. There's so many other films that aren't released already and probably won't be, outside of Criterion. |

The Universal release seems to have excellent PQ @ AQ. Really?...is it that important to gripe about it just so you can have a "C" on the package. There are so many films that need Criterion upgrades before Moonrise Kingdom.

This is completely unnecessary and a little bit too "Wes Anderson fanboyish".Most importantly - it won't change anything. |

Well, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic and (a non Anderson movie) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were released by Criterion (under a distribution deal with the respective studios) when they first came to home video. The Criterion DVDs of Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic are the only R1 DVDs of those movies while the Criterion BD of Benjamin Button is (as far as I know) the only BD release of that movie.

No, thanks. It'd be a waste of a release. The regular edition will be perfectly fine.

While I agree with everyone here, there are plenty of movies not even released on blu-ray that need to be, I personally want to see all of Wes Andersons films as part of the criterion collection for the special features department. I don't really care about the prettier packaging and the "C" but it does bother me to no end that any of his films released by Criterion get pretty packed with special features and any that don't, get shit all. I want an audio commentary and/or an extensive (60+ minutes at the very least) 'making of' documentary. If they got it right I wouldn't crave the criterion treatment but as it is, the special features for Fantastic Mr. Fox & especially Moonrise Kingdom aren't good enough. Moonrise Kingdom is basically barebones which might be good enough for people who only care about watching the movie but special features are my main deciding factor in buying a blu-ray so it's pretty irritating when I end up giving in and buying a lazy release. Say what you will about Criterion and Wes Andersons relationship but at least they're considerate enough to give fans what they deserve. |

I'll say again, not needed, and a waste of Criterion catalog space. Apparently, the 3 emails they received didn't work.
If fans want commentaries and such, it's up to the original distributor to give those to fans. Complain to UNIVERSAL, you know, because they put out the disc in the first place. It's not up to Criterion to re-issue a perfectly good release just because the original distributor dropped the ball. This film flopped stateside, barely making half it's budget. No wonder universal didn't pony up extra millions to make a full-fledged special edition. If fans really loved it, they should've supported it more in theaters. THAT'S how you get a special edition. ![]() ![]() I, for one, would pay $15.99 for a packed edition of Moonrise Kingdom, but with such a lack thereof I am going to wait for a further price drop. I think the regular studios should do great editions of their movies. Criterion is quite a novelty, and their discs are too expensive for me. |

I know it isn't Criterions job to fix what other studios drop the ball on, I'm just suprised they haven't WANTED to. Afterall, they did it for Traffic and Dazed and Confused. Neither of which are anywhere near as popular as the Wes Anderson Criterion releases. People ***** and moan about how Anderson is the worst thing to happen to Criterion collection and how much they hate him but I often check the sales ranks for Criterion blu's and there's almost always an Anderson release on the first page. And that's such a weak point that if more people saw it, it would've recieved a better blu-ray release. Most hollywood films that makes shit loads of money at the box office recieve mediocre to poor special features. As for Moonrise Kingdom, the American limited release occurred on May 25, and set a record for the best per-theater-average for a non-animated movie by grossing an average of $130,752 in four theaters. Bottle Rocket Budget = $7 million Bottle Rocket Gross = $1,040,879 Rushmore Budget = $20 million Rushmore Gross = $17,105,219 The Royal Tenenbaums Budget = $21 million The Royal Tenenbaums Gross = $71,441,250 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Budget = $50 million The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Gross = $34,808,403 The Darjeeling Limited Budget = $17.5 million The Darjeeling Limited Gross = $35,078,918 Fantastic Mr. Fox Budget = $40 million Fantastic Mr. Fox Gross = $46,471,023 4 of Wes Andersons 7 films didn't make their budget back (including Moonrise Kingdom), 1 only JUST made it's budget back and only 2 of his 7 films have actually been somewhat of a hit. They didn't even set a record like Moonrise Kingdom did which is impressive. How much Moonrise Kingdom made is irrelevant. They're aware that Moonrise Kingdom frequently tops peoples lists of best films of 2012 and that it's recieved widespread critial acclaim whether you or plenty of others agree with it or not, it's true, they're aware that Wes Anderson fans have grown accustomed to the kind of special features treatment we've been getting from Criterion, they're aware that we're really disappointed with what we got for Fantastic Mr. Fox and yet they go ahead and give us a truly dismal selection of special features to the point of it being an almost barebones release. I've got to assume they're planning to do what they did for Traffic and Dazed and Confused and also let Criterion do their release in the near future because what we got from them is truly laughable. It would make sense if that's their plans. By giving us a truly pathetic selection of special features they would've known would bug us, they know that when Criterion releases theirs that will no doubt be packed full of goodies, people will flock to that release after they've already made a pretty penny with people who either don't care about special features, don't know much or anything about Criterion or were too impatient like myself. Either way that would be a good way to keep their relationship healthy. Anyway, who knows what will happen. This is all just what I'm thinking. I know plenty of people hate Wes Anderson and to be honest I can understand why but I can't help liking him and being irritated by those two releases lacking in the special features department. Again, I don't necessarily care about them being released by Criterion or whoever, I care about getting good special features and Criterion are the ones who actually do bother to give his movies what they deserve for us to enjoy. |
