Default Gamepro: BUSTED: 27 Most Dangerous Gaming Myths

http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/inter...Features&pos=2

its a five page article, so i'm not going to post more than the first link, but there is some pretty good stuff in here and some pretty eh? stuff.

good stuff (remember these are statements that are false and gamepro is "busting them")

-HDMI and component look the same
-No difference between 720p and 1080p
-The PS3 is a dud
-HD DVD is beating blu-ray
-When a game says it runs in 720p or 1080p its telling the truth
-downloads will replace discs
-S-Video is fine for HD
-1080i looks better than 720p
-porn will settle the next-gen hd format war

bad stuff (remember these are false statements)
-Blu-ray is beating HD DVD (however, they do note that blu-ray has the edge and explain why, i think they just wanted to avoid a flame ware on their website, so they threw this one in)
-lcd/plasma looks better than old fashioned crt. well, they need to specify in the title that they are talking about hd crts, which hardly anybody makes, citing "old-fashioned" gives off the impression that a new plasma or lcd won't make a difference
-1080p is neseccary - come on we know it is

hmm..interesting read. thanks! i wonder what everyone here will complain about haha

A popular misconception is that new-fangled LCD and plasma TVs have better image quality than an old-school cathode-ray tube TV, all HD resolutions being equal.

This is actually false. An HD CRT will almost always look better than an HD LCD or plasma TV, as CRT boasts deeper, more vibrant color.
finally. proof my xbr960 is better than today's lcd's. haha. i keep telling people, they refuse to believe

1080p is not necessary unless you want to watch a HD format..

if you don't plan on making the jump to HD DVD or BD...1080p is useless for you...

that's just the truth....especially with the price difference...

the only positive with 1080p is if you have a 1080p upscaler...and even then it's still a waste of money because it's really not HD...

1080p is well worth the investment if you want to purchase a high def format movie player..

of course I didn't...

because the average person on these forums think that 1080p is a must...

and while it is for watching high def movies...if you don't plan on doing that, it's useless..

but obviously you know that

Yea, with 1080i content I'd take a CRT over most LCD/plasmas.

My first HD set was a 30" Zenith CRT. The picure for 1080i content was godly. And for the price it beat LCD/Plasma.

My 1st HDTV was a Samsung CRT. The picture quality was great and there was no blur during the action. But it was only 30". Its very hard to make a 50" CRT TV. It must weigh 500lbs.

I find it interesting that with this statement:

Quote:
Most times, 720p and 1080i are just about even-- they each have strengths and weaknesses but you'll be hard-pressed to spot a big difference
He doesn't make the myth go both ways. There are just as many people who believe that 720p is always better than 1080i as there are who believe the inverse.

MYTH: Backward compatibility is a crucial feature.
Not so much. Backward compatibility sounds like a must-have feature, but in reality, it's more of an added bonus. There's little hard data on exactly how many gamers use the backward compatibility found in new-gen consoles, but judging by the wishy-washy backward compatibility on the Xbox 360 and the 40GB PS3, it's likely that this feature doesn't rank particularly highly on the lists of many average gamers.
Sweet Jeebus, every HD DVD fanboy needs to read that over and over again. I am so sick of how people on forums (gaming, HD, whatever) try to play BC as being such a needed or wanted feature. It only is to forum dwellers. The vast majority of gaming fans don't give two [fill in the blank].

Bless Gamepro for stating this. It's one of my biggest "pet peeves" about gaming discussions.

Did anyone else find this statement a little misleading

Quote:
more movie studios are shifting from exclusive Blu-ray deals to publish on both HD formats
Who has or is shifting from blu exclusive to neutral? No one.

Paramount is the only company that has made any changes, and aside from Warner's whatever you want to call it satement about re-evaluating their stance (which definitely moreso indicated a switch to Blu than to HDDVD if anything), no other companies have hinted about making a change that I'm aware of.

And the guy still mentioned the frickin stalemate comment.

I enjoyed the read except for the Bluray/HDDVD stuff. And although they didn't name a winner, they sure act like Toshiba has a lot more going for them than they do. Is anyone else sick of hearing that HD-DVDs cost less to make, yet no one ever mentions that Blu-rays generally cost less to buy?

one thing just crossed my mind...

after what has transpired the last 12 months in regards to disc sales...

if Warner somehow thought it were a good idea to go HD-DVD exclusive after "re-evaluating" their decision...

I'd be awfully tempted to cut down my BD purchases out of pure bitterness because they obviously don't have the consumer's interest at heart....

they would have obviously taken a payoff and there would be little integrity left in this war, let alone an attempt to have a high def format emerge and take off....

things would get worse...

the BD camp has shown complete loyalty to Warner and if they decided that HD-DVD was the better choice....it would be like promoting cocaine as not a bad idea because "it's not exactly crack"..
