Default If Sony drop another $50 on Ps3....

If Sony drop another $50 on Ps3 for a limited time only like a week before Xmas. I bet the PS3 would be flying off the shelf and put HD-DVD six feet under once and for all. They already pretty dominate Europe and Australia in term of hardware and software sales. Loose the money now but they'll get it all back when HD-DVD goes belly up with all the licensing fees and patents.
I'm not into format war but I really hate to see my favorite movies releasing on one format not the other. I just want to watch HD content.

Sony would do it eventually. They are very secretive about what they do.

I can't see that happening for quite some time, they just dropped them all down $100.

You are still dealing with multi-billion dollar companies. Dropping the price of a PS3 $50.00 for a limited time will not end this.
It will be a combination of hardware sales, studio suppport and software sales, IMHO.

I expect a non-bundled PS3 to be at least 50 bucks cheaper around march...

The PS3 is fine at $399, Sony needs to concentrate on lowering the current 1.0 profile stand alone player prices to $299 or less for the holidays.

No more price drops on the PS3.
Have you not learned from Toshiba?
We mock Toshiba for selling players at a huge loss and yet you want the PS3 to do the same?
It is doing well enough for now, they need to focus on selling software.
As far as the blu ray format goes, it is the time for stand alones to make their move.

It will not end overnight but it will get more players in more household.
More players, more software sales. For studios who support both format will realize that if they sell 100 harry potter in bluray and 10 in HD-DVD they'll know which format to go with. Wouldn't you rather have your product flying off the shelf than sitting there collecting dust. When I went to Bestbuy today all the
LCD demo had Bluray player attached to it. They got enough promotion from retailers but it's the price that keep poeple away. I wasn't planning on getting the player yet but when I saw it for 279 dollars at Bjs I grabbed it right away and they were gone fast. Right now poeple are just waiting for it to become affordable. If HD-DVD keep dropping their prices poeple will jump into that and that will drive the software sales higher.

Your comment doesn't make sense. Just focus on selling the software?
Sony does not own all movies studios. They have no saying in what movie they want them to release and how many they want them to release. what do you expect poeple to play the software with if they don't buy the player first.

Toshiba spend just as much money on this project and they will fight till their last breath. They just paid one studio to come on board what make you think they will not try to do it again with other studios. If more poeple are buying $98 player at walmart it means more home penetration and more software sales. That's their gold try to get their players in every household as many as they can.

With the BOGO sales week after week with BD and the free movies / games with the players, the discount is already built into the total cost of ownership. As long as they keep the current sales rate and keep the software cost low, BD adoption will happen.

Regardless of which camp, how many disc can even the most loyal fan pay when the price is $30+ for each movie? I know I can only afford 1/3 to 1/2 the number of disc w/o getting into financial trouble. At 9.99 to 13.99, it absolutely makes no sense to stay with SD for people who has seen the difference.

I think for the next month or so, PS3 and the movie companies are already priced at the sweet spot where everybody can make money while promoting BD. I have no doubt that the price will come down or more things will be thrown in in 2008.

Software as in games.
You know, the thing that the PS3's main focus should be?
The stand alones are at 299 these days and dropping, the PS3 should NOT compete with them.

The drop in US$50 can come with a list of PS3 games that buyers can choose for themselves. That way, buyers GAIN US$50 while SCE loses less than US$30. That's a win-win situation.

Sony is a hardware maker. The software side is mostly out of their control outside of dev kits and politicking.

we do not need to put the price down on the ps3. the prices are just fine and besides if we did that to the ps3 we will be no better then Toshiba. The PS3 is well worth the $400 to $500 range and plus i got my PS3 back when the 60GB was $600 and it never crossed my mind that was too much money to spend on the PS3 especially since the PS3 is only getting better by the week

success comes from building value (more, better content) not slashing prices to stimulate demand.

toshiba firesales shows us that much

(this isn't to say regular prices cuts are bad, only irregular ones)

Not entirely true. Sony controls fifteen internal game development studios, so saying that they have no impact on software on the PS3 is an incorrect statement. They also control a sizable catalog of movies, so the Blu-ray movie side sees Sony with a fair amount of power on that side of the software equation too.

Another price drop isn't needed. What the BDA camp needs is accelerated introduction of 1.1 and 2.0 players, a variety of them, in and around the price of the PS3. In addition I would suggest heavier emphasis on prolific advertisement (make it a point to single out the hardware supporters-Panasonic, Phillips, Hitachi, etc).
