As a few of you may know from reading my previous posts, I bought the Samsung BD-P1200, and have had nothing but problems with it. As has been outlined by the lawsuit mentioned in another post, it won't play all BD movies, and it appears that Sammy has no intention, short of being forced, to provide proper updates. In my case, the player ate the one update disc I was originally provided, and when the unit was "repaired" and sent back to me, it wouldn't work. As a result, I'm just finished with Samsung. I will ebay the Samsung, eat my losses, and find a new player that works properly. But what's the best BD unit to buy?
Quite a number of people have tried to persuade me to buy the Sony PS3, and I'm sure that's a superb player, as well as a great game machine. But with all due respect for their opinions, I'd rather have a stand-alone BD player. That being the case, what's the best unit for sale that will play all BD movies--and will always provide firmware that works--and is reasonably priced? A high-end Sony stand-alone? Panasonic? Sharp? I would look at Pioneer Elite, which I'm sure is top-of-the-line, but that's too expensive for my taste. Any and all comments and advice would be most welcome and appreciated, as I'd like to buy a player this weekend. Right now, '3:10 to Yuma' and various Disney movies are sitting in my movie library, dying of a broken heart because they think I don't want to see them. |

I would guess go with a sony there updates are good with the ps3. You could assume the same would go with there standalone units.

I have 13 Blu-ray players & 5 different brands but the Ps3 & Panasonic are the best with the Sharp a close 2nd. Panasonic has the new BD50 coming out you might want to hang in there for that, Im gunna get rid of a few players to make room for a couple BD50's

From all the great responses I received, it looked to me like the Panasonic '30' was the unit to buy. But when Sonny told me about the '50' series model coming out soon, I decided to give Panasonic a call and find out as much about it as I could.
What I did discover is that it will be coming out in about two months, perhaps by mid-April. The techie said he could give me no specs or price, because none of the techies have been trained on it yet. I've read rumors, though, that it will be a 2.0 system. The one thing he did tell me is that the various software glitches that the '30' had ( and he emphasized that this was their first model, so there were bound to be a few problems) have all been addressed, and the new model should work smoothly. We've all learned how to take such claims with a liberal grain of salt, but in any case the '50' has to be a big step up from the Sammy 1200. Again, thanks everyone, for all your help. |

Assuming the PS3 doesn't get an update to decode DTS-HD MA internally, I'll be getting this player from Panasonic when it comes out. |

Its kinda sad that Samsung isn't doing too well when it comes to Blu-ray Disc Players cuz I usually think of them as producing high quality products you know?
At least their tv's definitely. As soon as I get my own apartment I plan on getting an HDTV and I'll definitely be looking at them, Philips, or LG. Anyways I really hope they look at what went wrong and create a STRONG, high quality Profile 2.0 player that looks as gorgeous as their current Dual Format players are. However if they can't pull together there's always LG and Panny around the corner. Or even Toshiba if they decide to give up on HD DVD. |

The 1400 may have less (or at least different) problems than the 1200, but, it is also a less expensive, lower quality player. When I bought my 1200 last May, the 1400s were running about 200$ less than the 1200. Im sorry, but unless they are also refunding the price difference, replacing the 1200 for the 1400 is NOT an option.

Yes. technology evolves. This drives prices down, -on the older technologies- that means, by your arguments, that since the 1400 was a better player, that the 1200 should have been less expensive. but it wasn't, it was the other way around. The 1200 and 1400 are pretty much the same where the blu-ray playback is concerned; but for dvd playback, the 1200 was the superior player because of the HQV chip. Since I have somewhere around 1000 SD-DVDs, a kick-ass upscaler was important to me, which is why I spent 200$ more on, what, by your argument, should have been a less expensive player. Your argument holds less water than a Louisiana levee during a category 5 hurricane.
