buy a hard drive enclosure, reformat the drive, and you now have an external HDD.

When my drive died I played around some. The system will turn on but go to an error screen with no drive installed. It is not able to do anything with a drive installed.

With my bad drive in it, I was able to scroll the xmb, go online, go to the PS Store and change system settings. My drive just would not load anything (including disc), and I was not able to back-up anything because the system would not recognize external media.

Was the external media formated in FAT32? The PS3 can't use drives or anything formatted in NTFS from what I've been told. I can't really say for sure as the only USB drives I've used came pre-formatted with FAT32.

It's true that the PS3 can't read external storage in NTFS. When I replaced my 60 with a 100 a long while ago I plunked the old drive in a 3.5" enclosure to use as an extra portable drive. After I formatted it in NTFS the PS3 wouldn't recognize it but after reformatting it back to FAT32 it worked like a charm. Now I use it to backup game data and offload video files I want to keep but don't want taking up my unit's built-in drive.

It is the same external drive and flash drive that worked before the HDD died and after I replaced it. My system just would not recognize them without a properly functioning HDD.

You need a HDD with at least 5GB space
