I think my PS3 hard drive is fried! - Blu-ray Forum

I came home yesterday, booted up my PS3 and I get a message saying something like "hard disk files corrupt. Need to repair files." "Press OK"

Well I press "OK" and then it seems to be doing it's thing for about a minute. After that the system reboots and then it gives me the same message over and over. Is my hard drive toast?

you can just easily change the HDD if you sure it's the culprit.
Lucky you, I got the whole PS2 fried (and that PS2 was the first Japanese batch - sad if I remember that - I plug it in in Indonesia - 220V)

Well if it is fried, then you're the first person I've met besides myself to have this happen. My drive crashed a couple weeks ago.

If you want to get a bigger drive, all you have to do is buy a 2.5" (laptop size) serial ATA harddrive and put it in. Really really easy to do, takes about 2 mins max with a philips screwdriver. Otherwise you'll have to send it to Sony to be repaired/replaced.

Getting it replaced is a really quick turnaround by Sony too, I was shocked when mine crapped out. I was a little hesitant at first but I had a brand new system in a week from my first call to them

Did you have to mail them the system? how do they arrange that?

Yes they sent me a box to pack everything in (system, controller and cables) via UPS. They give you a UPS overnight sticker to send back, dropped that box off at UPS and that same day I had email confirmation that my new system was sent out to me, had it in 2 days

That's wicked awesome. I delayed doing this because I thought I would just get a new HD anyways, but I have no money and won't be able to anytime soon.. might as well just get it replaced.

Do you need a copy of the receipt? what information do they ask for?

I tried replacing my PS3 hard drive and it wouldn't work. I got an error message saying "Not original hard drive can not start." Has anybody else had this problem? I really want to replace it because 60 gigs is just not enough space. I keep filling it up and always have to delete stuff. Thanks for any help.

Is that seriously the exact message it gives you? Where are you located? Are you using the proper drive type, or an adapter kit?

This is the first I have heard of the HDD's crapping out. I have a 250gig ps3 & 2 more 60gig ps3's they will soon get 120gig HDD's or250gig HDD's spec since the ps3 DVR is coming to town(&some big ex HDD's 750gig,1tybt!!!) if you can not fix it put an 85.00$ 120gig HDD in it & filler UP!!!!

Yes I am using the proper drive. 5200rpm 2.5 inch sata. I've tried using several different drives. Keep getting the same error message. I'm located in Los Angeles, CA.

I had this message after the latest update. restarted and and no problems.

its already pre-loaded on there.

I guess it loads from flash memory or something. check out the link I posted to the upgrade guide, it's pretty clear on how it works. I haven't done it yet myself as I have no money, so I can't speak from first hand experience.

Question: Were both of you connected to an ethernet port at the time??
