i dont care if it is a near miss, id rather sit in a car for 20 minutes than die from a hurricane

There aren't even 90,000 people in Galveston. The population there is around 60,000. You probably misheard and they said 9,000. That's still a shitload of people sticking around. Hurricane Rita was a nightmare evacuation. Probably the worst-handled evacuation in history. 5 million people all trying to leave at the same time. My parents live in Baytown and they evacuated to my aunt's house in Pasadena. That's around 20 minutes further inland. Cedar Bayou (feeds into Galveston Bay) is around a 2 minute drive right down the street from my parents' house. The Houston Ship Channel runs right by Baytown as well. My grandma is also in Pasadena with them. She lives in League City, which is further south, right by Seabrook. Seabrook is already under water, like Galveston. I don't know why ANYONE would stay in areas that are right on the water. The storm surge is going to be 20 feet or worse. That's incredibly dangerous. But Rita frustrated the hell out of people. More people died because of the evacuation than because of the storm. But that one veered off at the last second and hit western Louisiana. I think people are expecting another "boy cried wolf" scenario, but it's not going to happen this time. It's too close to land already and it's very clearly going to hit somewhere around Galveston (meaning Baytown will get the worst of the storm surge since it's to the northeast of Galveston )

That might be Hooters at Seabrook. There's one right on Highway 146 in Seabrook.

I guess you're looking at 3 dead people. Sorry to sound cruel but they were warned that if they stay, they are most likely dead. Guess as in many instances in life, they have to learn things the hard way and this lesson might as well cost them thier life.

One thing I can say right now to everyone across the country. Get gas right now before the prices spike. Because it WILL happen. The biggest Exxon refinery in the U.S. is located in Baytown and there are a SHITLOAD of refineries in the Houston area. Every one of them is going to get shut down by this storm. So if your car is low on fuel, get it now before the price goes off the charts.

I heard about that on the news yesterday or today. Boy, I've never been happier that I don't drive (or don't have to).

Yep, the wholesale price was already over $5 as of Friday morning. Power is going to be out for a day or two at those refineries in the Houston area. That's just going to drive the prices higher.
