Default Acoustic Suggestions?

I was just curious if anyone can point me in the right direction for purchasing acoustic panels or foam.

I have a room that is 24' x 12' for my home theater. It will have tile flooring which I know will cause some echo but I'm going to purchase a large area rug and we have enough furniture I believe it will cancel out a majority of the problems.

I'm still interested in getting some wall panels or foam or something to help out.

1) Does it actually help?
2) Foam vs Panels?
3) Best place to purchase these products at a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance!

I went to Lowe's and purchased a box of acoustical ceiling tiles, the kind you hang in a drop ceiling. Then I went to the fabric store and got some batting and some cool fabrics that accentuate the decor of my room. Scissors and a hot glue gun are all you need from there. The whole project cost less than $75.

See the OP in this thread for sources of acoustic treatments. In re: foam vs. panels, it depends on the panel, but you should absolutely pay attention to the specs for each product. Furniture is not a substitute for good room treatment, if that's your goal.

The rug is definetely a must! Furniture can also help depending if they will reflect or effectively absorb the sound.

1) The wall panels or foam will normally help but they have to be located in the correct positions and of the correct type to address issues in your room.

Recently I've looking online for acoustic panels. I've been wondering if I should make my own DIY panels or buy some.

Then I found GIK Acoutic products. Prices are great and the products are nice (the website has a lot of info).

I want to get two GIK Monster Bass Trap for the front corners/speakers and two GIK 242 for first reflection points, then build up on that.

Look at the review on Audioholics.

Now I only have to convince my girlfriend that I need them!

Like RealTraps' Ethan Winer, GIK's Bryan Pape (bpape) may be found on several fora, answering questions and offering professional advice. Both are happy to help by phone or email, as well.

Thanks again for all the help! I'm sure it gets old responding to us "noobs".

I will definitely check out all the suggestions because I know once the tile is in the room that regardless of the furniture and the area rug(s), there will still need to be some sort of treatment in place.
