Default SD Card Help! Urgent!

Trying to get in before shipping deadlines so it arrives by Christmas.

What kind of SD card do I need for a Panasonic 35? I know the minimum is 1 GB, but why are there SD - SDHC - Class 6 - along with a million different brands out there on Amazon? Sandisk? Kingston? Transcend?

Why one do I need, and what do you recommend I get?

Actually, I use a 512MB and it works fine so far the disks have only used a tiny fraction of it. However I will be upgrading it. WHY do we need 1GB? For the videos to download? Also what are the advantages of using more?

You can get them so cheap now. I bought a 4 gig at Office Depot for $9.99. Will never use that much, but more is always better to me.
