Default Pioneer Elite 03 Receiver and DTS True HD

I have the Pioneer Elite 03 receiver, and just hooked up the Sony BDP S360 player. When I turn on a blu ray, it turns the receiver automatically to THX Cinema. I thought it should read DTS True, or something like that on my receiver, am I wrong? I don't see it anywhere. I have it hooked up through HDMI, and I know the Elite handles everything else really well. Thanks for the help!!

I have the capability in theory. I only have 5.1 set up right now. I didnt realize that you had to have 7.1 in order to bitstream? I have the same receiver as you...do you have issues, or are you 7.1 already? Thanks for the help

Set you're player to Bitstream the audio out. There is a chance that it's set to LPCM. In that case, yes THX Cinema DSP could be applied.

The Blu-ray player does not (cannot) tell your receiver to turn on THX Cinema. That's something you engaged yourself. The fact that the AVR display does not say Dolby Digital or DTS indicates the player has already decoded the soundtrack and is outputting PCM.

Normally, in a 5.1 system, a DSP like THX Cinema can only be applied to a stereo PCM source. That also points to player decoding. It also suggests the player is set to downmix the multichannel track to two channels.

So, what are the audio settings of your Blu-ray player?

And, no, you don't need 7.1 to bitstream. Bitstream merely means sending an encoded track to an external processor for decoding.

So, should I select whatever option there is besides having the player downmix? I had thought the DTS-MA was automatic, but it doesn't sound any different than when I listen to a blu ray on my PS3. I have listened to Dark Knight, U571, Spiderman 3, all sound identical. Not sure what else to do. I have the Pioneer Elite 03, HDMI hook ups for everything, and 5.1 speaker set up. Thanks for your feedback!

Set the audio to bitstream in your blu ray player. That should do the magic. Let me know if this does not work.

Please post your player audio settings. That's the only way for others to help. (As I said in response to your similar post in the BD Players thread, you need to set BD Audio to Direct to get a bitstream output. There is no specific bitstream setting on the Sony players.)

But, I'm not sure what you are expecting. The audio will not sound any better than what you get from a PS3. PS3s can decode all formats.

i was curious as to what your system speaker set-up was, I only have 3.1 for now and I haven't even had a chance to set it up yet, I have had everything for a week now but I need to make an audio stand. When i purchased the receiver the guy at BB told me you wouldn't be able to receive true HD etc. without a 7.1 system.

Another clueless salesman at a chain store. (Or, maybe not so clueless if he makes money off each piece of gear he sells. )

There are only a handful of discs with 7.1 TrueHD soundtracks. Nearly all of them are 5.1. There are more 7.1 dts-MA releases. But, most of them are 5.1, too. That's the way movies are mixed for theatrical release. If you have a 5.1 system, 7.1 sources are downmixed, folding the rear channels back into the surrounds.
