Abysmal, would never watch again!
Poor excuse for a horror film, but it had one or two moments of horrific joy.

Once again, football season has begun, the stores are stocked with Halloween candy and some cold air is making its way through.
Just a good a time to kickoff the marathon to pump you up for the Halloween season, I say.

So without further adieu....

9/10:
Slice (2018) *Saw in theaters*
A weird and funny 80s horror comedy throwback despite a few slow spots.

9/20:
Michael Jackson's Thriller 3D (1983/2018)
Still great after all these years. Great sound and remastered picture with a strong 3D conversion.

9/21:
The Nun (2018) *Saw in theaters* 1/2 Strong, striking atmosphere and visuals with some good acting with tension and suspense without cheap jump scares. A little too much comic relief in places though. Still, an entertaining and atmospheric horror movie worthy of the Conjuring universe.

9/22:
Revenge of the Creature (1955) *First time viewing*
Joyfully schlocky sequel to The Creature from The Black Lagoon. Much of the horror elements from the original is clearly absent here and is more funny than anything else.

9/25:
Revenge (2018) *First time viewing*
Has some nice cinematography, it was just the same thing regurgitated that's nothing special despite the overhype and hooplah.

The Lift (1983) *New to Blu-Ray*
1/2
A few campy moments and a muddled plot but it has a neat concept and is a quite effective and enjoyable little horror film.

9/27:
The House of Sorority Row (1983) *Saw in theaters*
A cheesy and unintentionally funny yet entertaining early 80s slasher with a basic, solid story that atmospheric, classy and has moments of suspense.

9/29:
The Creature Walks Among Us (1956) *First time viewing* Slow paced but never dull schlock Black Lagoon sequel.

9/30:
It Comes At Night (2017) *First time viewing* 1/2
Slow paced yet tense and atmospheric survival dramatic horror

10/1:
Hell Fest (2018) *Saw in theaters* 1/2
Thoroughly entertaining slasher flick with minor early hiccups. Awesome production design and cinematography with a hardcore score to boot.

The Funhouse (1981)
Like Hell Fest, the movie had strong atmosphere and mood, an awesome score and gorgeous cinematography but the characters here were much more cliched and borderline cardboard where you could careless if they made it or not but a solid and enjoyable film regardless.

10/2:
Slaughter High (1986) *New to Blu-Ray*
Decent slasher premise with some decent tension and insane, over the top kills but weighted down by a dumb script with equally dumb, stock characters and laughable dialogue and acting.
But, a fun movie to watch despite or, in this case, because of it.

Hell Night (1981) *New to Blu-Ray*
Better than average slasher elevated by a nice gothic atmosphere, some solid suspense along with a few good jump scares and a decent enough story.

10/4:
The Boogens (1981) 1/2
A well made and effective slow burn creature feature. Campy at parts but it has a real creepy, eerie atmosphere, a strong build up and characters that are truly likable (a rarity in horror films).

10/5
Offerings (1989) *First time viewing*
Poor excuse for a horror film on every possible level.

Blood Hook (1987) *First time viewing*
A truly unique horror comedy. A hybrid of Friday the 13th and Major League Fishing. Full of colorful characters, nice outdoor atmosphere, a decent amount of humor and many grisly kills but the results felt uneven and could've been somewhat shorter.

Pirahna II: The Spawning (1981) *New to Blu-Ray*
Despite the BTS issues, it's a pretty entertaining B-movie. Sure, it's cheesy and the creature effects are laughable but it delivers what every fun, late night creature feature should plus you have many beautifully filmed underwater scenes and an awesome score to boot.

10/6:
The Return of the Vampire (1943) *First time viewing*
The unofficial sequel to Dracula has a lot of cheesy dialogue, a dumb, plot hole ridden and heavily inconsistent plot but it's still an enjoyable watch thanks to Bela Lugosi, who still aces it as "Dracula" plus there's a lot of funny moments along and the gothic atmosphere is still there, but not as strong as Universal's Dracula films.

10/7:
The Initiation (1984) *New to Blu-Ray* 1/2
One of the better slashers of the era. Surprisingly well made with some good acting sprinkled on and while the plot was kind of telegraphed early, it manages to be quite solid.

Neon Maniacs (1986) *First time viewing*
Decent creature effects and a nice sounding smooth jazzy theme salvages this abysmal film.

The Mummy (1932) *First time viewing*
Creepy and atmospheric but a little too similar to Lugosi's Dracula and lacks the elements that made that film engaging. One of the weaker films in the Universal Monster films.

10/9:
The Wolf Man (1941) *First time viewing*
A well done monster movie across the board. Strong atmosphere, splendid acting, beautiful cinematography and solid script. One of the best of the Universal Monster films.

10/10:
Halloween (1978)
Saw this in the theaters and it was such a thrill to see this on a large (and properly masked) screen with an audience. The DCP was in great quality and with awesome sound.
As for the movie, it still holds up and rightfully earns its place as one of the greats.

10/11:
Horror Express (1972)
A thoroughly entertaining Lee/Cushing creature feature. Not a Hammer film but carries the same type of atmosphere and style that Hammer is known for.

10/12:
*My annual go-to flick*
Don't Go In The Woods (1981)
Yeah, it's cheesy and campy as hell and that what makes the movie all that much of a hoot to watch and one of my favorite 80s slasher flicks.

10/13:
Savage Weekend (1976) *First time viewing*
Painfully dull, totally incoherent and a chore to watch before even getting to anything that resembles a slasher film.

10/14:
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) *Criterion Blu-Ray*
A pure unadulterated horror masterpiece on every level. An excellent mix of the psychological, psychosexual and disturbing, gory portions of the genre.
The acting's top notch across the board. Jodie Foster displays a gambit of emotions in her performance while Anthony Hopkins gives a performance for the ages making Hannibal Lecter one of the most diabolical and scariest villains in film history and Ted Levine does well here himself as Buffalo Bill.
The exchanges between Foster's Starling and Lecter are outright gold a long with the striking camerawork that makes the film that much powerful.
After 27 years, this still remains one of the most disturbing and outright scariest horror films ever made if not, one of the greatest films ever made. It hasn't lost its effect to get under your skin and freak you out and it's also the late Jonathan Demme's best film.

10/15:
*My annual go-tos*
Madman (1982) 1/2
The Video Dead (1987) 1/2

10/16:
*My annual go-tos*
John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
Still holds up very well after all these years. Simple yet thoroughly effective and its special effects are still superior to any of the CGI used today.

10/17:
*My annual go-tos*
Curtains (1983) 1/2
One of my faves of the slasher genre. Despite its BTS happenings, it still manages to be a solid and quite enjoyable film.

10/18:
Halloween (2018) *Theatrical viewing* 1/2
This is the TRUE sequel to the original film. Far surpasses all the other sequels without question. Some minor flaws here and there but they served a purpose to the movie, though should've been done a little better. Jamie Lee Curtis was awesome here as was Will Patton but wished he got a little more time to spend with his character.
A worthy sequel to such an iconic horror film.

10/19:
Halloween Revisits
Halloween II (1981) 1/2
Watchable flick once you can get past the unlikable and irritating hospital characters and some of the more convoluted portions of the film. Downgrading my rating from last year by 1/2 a skull.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) 1/2
Essentially a feature length Twilight Zone Episode. Interesting plot in the veins of Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it's marred by major inconsistencies, implausibilities and some incoherence. Tom Atkins made for a good leading man while Dan O'Herlihy delivers as the charismatic yet sinister villain Cochran.
Watchable but could've been a little better.

10/20:
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) *First time viewing*
A great mixture of the comedy of Abbott and Costello and the horror of the Universal Monsters. Both atmospheric and really funny to boot.
One of the best fusions of comedy and horror ever.

10/21:
Child's Play (1988) 1/2
Fright Night director Tom Holland takes an otherwise silly premise and turned it into a highly effective horror film thanks to a well written script and good acting all around.
I would've liked a little more build up with the Charles Lee Ray character but it did get the point across about his history.

Nightbreed (Director's Cut) (1990) *First time viewing*
A little confusing at points but it's an imaginative and fun film from Clive Barker.
Filled with the trademark style and imagery he's known for and also filled with some quite colorful and interesting creatures.

10/22:
Annual Rob Zombie/Firefly Double Feature
House of 1000 Corpses (2003) 1/2
More music video-ish at times but solid enough horror flick.

The Devil's Rejects (2005)
One of the best horror sequels ever and one of the few that surpasses the original.
Great 70s grindhouse flavor and a kickass soundtrack to boot.
If 3 From Hell is 1/10th the movie that this was, I say that we're in for a real treat.

10/23:
Annual Go-tos
My Bloody Valentine (1981) 1/2
StageFright (1987)

10/24:
*Annual go-to:
The Dead Pit (1989) 1/2
Debut film from Lawnmower Man director Brett Leonard. It starts a bit slow and has a flimsy plot but it's an entertaining and gory low budget (and it clearly looks like it, which adds to the movie's charm) zombie flick.

10/25:
Double "Dekker" Night
Night of the Demons (1986) *First time viewing* 1/2
Really fun flick with some neat practical creature effects and camerawork but you don't really care about the characters nor their subplots except for Tom Atkins, of course.
He rocked in this and provided much of the movie's laughs.

The Monster Squad (1987)
Another really fun flick. A few campy moments but found it more simplistic and better than Creeps plus there's a nice balance between the comedy and the more darker, scarier moments.

10/26:
*Annual Friday the 13th double feature*
Friday the 13th (1980) 1/2
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) 1/2

10/27:
*My annual go-to*
The Evil Dead (1981)

10/28:
Amityville 3D (1983) 1/2
Decent 3D effects and eerie score salvages this confusing and flat out boring flick.

The Phantom of the Opera (1989) 1/2
Though uneven in the third act, it's a solid, atmospheric and entertaining adaptation of the original story.

13 Ghosts (1960)
Not even William Castle's gimmicks could make this movie enjoyable.
Totally devoid of any kind of suspense, tension or scares. Pure campiness across the board.

10/29:
Romero Anniversary Double Feature
Night of the Living Dead (1968) *50th Anniversary*
With my hectic work schedule last week, I didn't get the chance to check out the Fathom screenings but did managed to grab the Criterion Blu-Ray. The restoration was really well done plus the sound was impressive as well. After 50 years, it still manages to remain one of the greats.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) *40th Anniversary*
And after 40 years, Dawn also still manages to be just as great as Night. Just the difference is a much larger scale, tone difference and Romero's witty satire on consumerism.
Still waiting for the 3D version over here, BTW.

10/30:
*Annual go-to*
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

10/31:
Hey Arnold! - Arnold's Halloween (Season 2, Episode 7)
One of my favorite episodes of the series and one of the downright funniest.

Night of the Demons (1988)
The remastered steelbook didn't show up in time but didn't stop me from watching it and enjoying the film immensely. Even after 30 years, it stills holds up.

Zombie (1979) 1/2
Got the chance to check out the 4K Restoration in a theater. It was pure joy to see Lucio Fulci's masterpiece on the big screen with the image being the best that I've ever seen it along with some nice sound.

9/5Hereditary Lived up to the hype! Fantastic movie.

9/6 Ghost Stories Fantastic atmosphere. Thought the ending went a little off the rails though. Overall really enjoyed it!

9/7 Halloween Always a classic. Probably my favorite slasher of all time.

9/8 Halloween 2 I had only seen this once before, but found myself enjoying it much more than previously.

9/9 Terrifier Art the clown is such a fantastic villain. I wish the movie's storyline was a little better though.

Woo-hoo!!!

I'll only post this one once, but I've been obsessively rewatching:

1. Upgrade

Part sci-fi, part Cronenbergian body horror, all awesome. And that ending!

Decided that I'll save the bigger name films and classics for October and focus on films I haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time for September. I'm going to have more of a unified theme for the four weeks in October, whereas this month I'm being a little scatter-brained about which ones I watch. The asterisk will indicate films I have not seen before. I'll be adding my thoughts about each movie intermittently.

[Show spoiler]
September 7th:
Angst This movie has always unsettled me and I think it's one of the better portrayals of a serial killer put to film. Some of the camera work though is jarring and some scenes are little too drawn out, but overall, the movie does a great job of portraying the mindset of a serial killer.

Phantasm 1/2

September 8th:
Tenebrae

September 9th:
*The Beyond My first exposure to Lucio Fulci and I just could not really get into this film. Great gore scenes, but the movie just seemed to drag on so much and with no real plot, I ended up getting bored.

September 14th:
*Mandy

September 15th:
*Southbound 1/2 - This movie started off well and had an interesting concept, but it started lose me towards the middle once they started showing the monsters more or whatever they were supposed to be.

Heathers

September 21st:
The Predator (1987) 1/2 - Got the 4K for this and it looked spectacular. Not much to really say about it. It's a classic and has held up well.

September 22nd:
Black Swan

September 23rd:
*Green Room 1/2 - I've been wanting to see this movie for awhile now and it certainly did not disappoint. Probably one of the more suspenseful and bleak movies I've seen in some time. The acting is all around great and it's shot incredibly well, especially some of the more brutal scenes. Definitely would recommend if you're in the right mood.

September 25th:
*Tourist Trap (1979)

September 29th:
Scream

September 30th:
Scream 2

October 3rd:
Scream 3

October 4th:
Scream 4

October 7th:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

October 9th:
Psycho

October 10th:
Friday the 13th Part 1

October 11th:
Friday the 13th Part 2 1/2

October 12th:
Friday the 13th Part 3
Friday the 13th Part 4 1/2

October 13th:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead

October 14th - 20th:
The Haunting of Hill House TV Series 1/2

October 20th:
The Changeling

October 25th:
The Thing

October 26th:
Nightmare on Elm Street

In case you missed it, it was National Frankenstein Day the other day (August 30th). It just so happens that Frankenstein's monster is my favorite of the Universal monsters, so my folks and I popped in the original classic movie and watched it (my opinion on the '31 movie is the same as always--a little let down that the film re-arranged Mary Shelly's story so drastically, and the writing is pretty stiff with all the infodumping, but Boris Karloff totally owns the role and pushes the film well beyond its confines). I was quite smitten with Bride of Frankenstein when I saw it, and I just got around to seeing Son of Frankenstein yesterday (was surprised by the arty set designs and impressionist lighting, it's a darn good-looking film. I also finally see where Young Frankenstein got its dart-board scene from, lol).

Anyway, here's my template for upcoming posts. Apparently, I only had two posts for the '17 thread and I never listed my viewings--was moving across the country at the time, so I must have skipped out.

Skulls to copy and paste:

2016 Body Count
| 2015 Body Count | 2014 Body Count
2013 Body Count | 2012 Body Count | 2011 Body Count
2010 Body Count

Planned viewings:
  • All the Universal Monster movies. I have the whole lot of them now (the individual legacy collections), but have never seen any of the sequels to Dracula, The Invisible Man, Wolf Man, etc. Now is the time...
  • Annihilation (2018). Blind-bought the UHD earlier and watched it, and it's been under my skin ever since. Maybe even literally. Am I really myself even, or is there something else living in my skin?
  • When they come in: remastered editions of Creepshow, Halloween 2 and 3, and House on Haunted Hill (1999).
  • Lifeforce, because I have that remastered steelbook for it. This could segway into a great alien-themed marathon including...Alien...and Event Horizon, Pandorum, etc.
  • Hellraiser--have the trilogy, need to see the sequels.
  • Cube--have the UK Blu-Ray, still haven't seen it.
  • Nightmare on Elm Street--never did get around to the sequels.
  • Scream--once again, sequels.

Wanted to love this, sadly only from me. Nice idea, dragged down by some really terrible acting. And
[Show spoiler]where's the body count? Horror movie needs some corpses, dammit.

Thanks for starting the thread djgeneral!

1. Predator 2

A very different kind of Jungle. Set during a heatwave in LA while gangs are fighting for power, a detective must figure out who or what is killing and skinning victims alive, including friends from his police team. Not as good as the original but still fun to watch is such a different but very chaotic setting from the original.

PQ: 4.5 / 5
Great 4K upgrade by Fox. It has a very nice layer of film grain throughout that looks extremely natural as it should. The HDR/WCG transfer compliments the picture quite well. It has some very nice bright highlights including specular as the sun reflects off many different surfaces like cars and sweaty faces. Black levels are nice and deep. Detail is good and also better over the standard blu-ray. There’s some minor black crush but nothing excessive. Colors look very naturally saturated and they help accentuate the heat in the urban jungle of Los Angeles. No compression artifacts were spotted.

AQ: 4 / 5
Same as the old blu-ray but a good mix that still holds up well. Surround activity is constant but never forced. Dynamic range is good but nothing revelatory. Bass provides a nice amount of heft but it is a bit muddy at times. Directionality is also decent. Overall, given its age, the track sounds quite good.

2. Deep Blue Sea

Very fun shark movie. The parrot is definitely the best character of all. The director does a wonderful job at creating over-the-top, intense and very energetic action/horror sequences that are very fun to watch. Unfortunately, the script is quite bland with mostly mediocre characters and little emotional weight. The story itself is cliche even when considering its context in time. I will say that, for newcomers, it surprisingly plays with audience expectations in very good ways. Thankfully, the film moves at a fast pace and before you think too much about the mediocre script, the film is already setting you up for the next crazy shark attack.

PQ: 4.5 / 5
I was surprised at how well the picture holds up even now. It is a very filmic transfer by WB that seems accurate to its source. The picture is a bit murky at times due to the photography, but otherwise fine detail is good, colors are rendered very well (especially the different blues in the water) and bright and dark highlights are retained quite well. The CGI is easy to spot and looks bad at times by today’s standards, but that’s not a fault of the transfer.

AQ: 4 / 5
Quite an aggressive track. Dynamic range is extensive and plentiful, with the low-end staying active pretty much throughout the whole film. Be it with sharks crashing and bursting through things or the many different explosions. Surround activity is good at supporting on-screen events with plenty of atmospherics and a nice amount of plannings and discrete effects. The track could have sounded a bit clearer but it is still very fun to listen to.
