Onkyo 606 audio settings help!

So, I'm trying to set up my Onkyo 606 to output the audio. Aside from confusion in hertz, I don't know how to do all the settings.
Like you can choose from pcm/analog and choose stereo, mono, pure audio, etc. Then there is Dolby Digital and you can pick a load from that. Yet despite what I pick, my sky box won't output in 5.1 dolby digital despite what settings I pick.

I'd assume it'd show on the Onkyo's screen if it was working or not. So do I need to use optical to get 5.1 out of a sky box? What settings do I need to pick to get it to work, to output 5.1 in a show that has 5.1, and stereo from stereo Tv shows?

Optical, coax digital, or HDMI...your Skybox(?) might have all or just one of those possibilities. I would opt for HDMI (If avail), then Optical (if avail), then Coax (if avail).
The output settings to get 5.1 from your SkyBox might be something like "Dolby Digital", or just "Digital", or just "PCM", could be any of those in the menu for audio output.

This sort of came up in another thread, so make sure your Sky Box will output Dolby Digital- make sure it's turned to "On" or that it's selected if there are multiple options. It'll then try to use DD when it's available, and so forth.

As for the receiver, if it reads "Multich" the Sky Box is probably sending LPCM out to it, in which case it takes what it is given and outputs it. All the decoding is done on the Sky Box side.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, just leave it at the default in the Onkyo GUI- DD -> DD, DTS -> DTS, etc. You can choose to use an "Orchestra" listening mode with DTS if you like, but for starters I'd leave it be.

If we're talking about the same section (and I'm still a little iffy on that) you can create a preset for the receiver to output audio with a specific listening mode. For instance, if you change DD 5.1 to "Orchestra" for instance, it'll always apply the Orchestra listening mode when it receives a DD 5.1 signal.

Okay, thanks that clears that up. However, I'm somewhat baffled by this. I've got them all set to "last working or whatever" and multichannel set to multichannel pcm.
Yet the display keeps showing "TV Logic" How do I change this? I was also under the assumption during a Dolby digital soundtrack, it'd say so on the display, but mine doesn't.

Hell I even tried a True HD Blu-Ray earlier, and that only showed DTS, rather than true HD.

one thing to remember is not all shows are broadcast in 5.1 surround sound! Some are broadcast in 2.0 stereo

Set the receiver to dolby digital by pressing the right or right arrow under the listening mode heading on the remote also do the following in the setup menu

1. go to listening mode preset (option 5 in menu)
2. go to cable sat (option 3)

set the following

Analog / PCM = Direct
Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital
DTS = DTS
D.F. 2ch = PLii Movie
D.F. Mono = Mono Movie
Multich PCM = Multich
192k/176.4k = Direct
Dolby TrueHD = Dolby TrueHD
DTS-HD Master Audio = DTS-HD MSTR

From the Main Menu

Select option 1 Input/Output assign

Select Monitor Out
HDMI Monitor = Yes

Go to HDMI Input and make sure that you have selected the right settings for each input.

Give those thigns a try and see what happens

Thanks for that information. However, I have set those like that, and I am still having problems. I recently discovered the Sky HD box can only output Stereo via HDMI, so I switched to Optical cable.
I changed the input/output settings so it is used for the audio. However the display still reads HDMI, but I guess this is in reference to the video connection. There is no mention of Optical though.

But even after that, changing those settings, when I try a recorded program which I know was in 5.1, it will not correct the mode to play it, nor will any of the selected modes play it correctly.
I'm begining to get worried/highly annoyed as I don't want to waste money on these speakers for them to not be universal.


EDIT: Okay, I partly solved it, but still not really. Turns out you can turn off the option for it to take audio from the HDMI cable, and choose optical. So I did that, except I now get no sound regardless of choices, or shows. It is the right socket, as it picks it via it detecting audio.
To make it more annoying, it does that click each time you change channels, where it usually changes audio modes. That will really get annoying. Help please. I'm getting to the end of my tether.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I recently went to change the options that choose "Direct" to "Stereo" as they should really be in stereo. I went to change these settings, but saw they had all reverted to stereo/direct. Why did they do this?
Is there any way to stop them resetting themselves? Also, is it okay to set one that should output in direct to output in stereo?
