I'm guessing that by affordable you mean $300-$400. I would get either the Onkyo 606 or the Yamaha 663 for that price. Don't touch a Sony in that price range, only their ES line is decent. The rest have bad distortion and do not bench test well with all channels driven.

I have always been leary about Sony receivers. It just seems like Yamaha and Onkyo seem to do more, and better, at a better price.

The problem is he wants 3 to 5 hdmi inputs (sorry Yamaha - and I like Yamaha alot...check the sig). Now Yamaha can get back into the mix if he doesn't mind purchasing an inexpensive hdmi switcher. The only reason Sony (non ES) is in the mix...the amount of HDMI inputs they provide and cost - that's it.
