They're not terrible, they're just mediocre, which is especially lame when you factor in the fact that it's Star Wars and should be receiving the royalty treatment. They look alright and the colors are better than the weird color-grading of the DVD editions, but there's tons of room for improvement. I fully expect Disney's next release based off of the new 4K scans to blow this version out of the water no problem.

They really look poor in comparison to properly done remasters from this era. The discs retain a digital-looking image with fake grain, frozen grain, DNR, and odd color timing. Are they absolutely horrible? No, there are worse catalog titles from Universal and Paramount for example. But, they are not good and movies like this (SE or not) should be looking top notch. I mean these are 12 year-old scans! That is ancient.

The issues is less the saturation, and more they are 100% wrong

Yeah, they are desaturated for sure. Maybe someone has their color setting up high.

No I meant the issue is not the saturation but the colours being wrong.
Corrected so it reads like English

Sometimes.

Sometimes the bad DVD colors are still there.

ANH looks a lot better than ROTJ to me. ROTJ looked like an upconverted DVD. I haven't watched the TESB disc yet.

It's a desert planet, so it was always explained away as being mostly underground with few buildings on the surface. I could totally live with that.

Still the same underlying master with the colour jacked up to silly levels though, all they've done is tone down the very worst artefacts that it caused in the first place like the blue fringing around the Death Star explosion.

Thought I'd get out the '04 DVD to have a look see at the Death Star (yep, bizarre blue fringing a-go-go) but what really struck me was the sound quality when it explodes, there's some blatant clipping when it first goes up (which is even worse on the DD 2.0 downmix). People may remember I've mentioned that before in reference to the other two movies on Blu because they basically had the super-hot DVD mixes ported over, whereas Ep IV on Blu sounds much smoother because it was specially remixed yet again. Pity the other movies weren't afforded the same courtesy.

I know, I was playing around with the DD 2.0 because the music doesn't sound so weird in the rears compared to the 5.1 EX on the DVD, but the clipping is horrendous so that's out.

Shame the LD or the original 35mm tracks could not be found and synched somehow...

Some other mags I have from the era are the same.

My memories of Hoth are definitely a strong blue cast, but that probably comes from watching that movie a hundred times on a cool whites CRT all through my youth. Today's TVs, especially when calibrated, are a lot warmer. Some warm modes are too warm, yet we advise everyone use warm by default, creating a whole new problem the opposite direction.

Hoth looks pretty blue on my calibrated set, in any event. Though not as blue as my memories of it, for explained reasons.

I have the theatrical cuts (LD ports) on DVD, and Hoth in Empire looks blue as it should.

... and Luke's airspeeder pulls off an MC Escher loop trick around the AT-AT legs.

I don't always watch Star Wars, but when I do, I put in blue Hoth.
