I've never seen the original trilogy uncut theatrical releases. Can someone advise which original trilogy release should I watch and where to obtain it? i.e. DVD or Laser disc? Has any of them been transferred (uncut) to digital copy etc?

Personally I find the use of word 'rape' when people describe their opinions about the special editions/BD editions or prequels (well, for that matter for a negative view of any film they have a problem with) extremely offensive. Not just towards the filmmaker/filmmakers they are referring to, but towards others too. In my view it's an insensitive and inappropriate term in such contexts, and also goes some way to undermine the credibility of the argument being made too. I have no problem with people wanting a so-called 'unaltered' version of the Star Wars films being restored and released on BD (I would like that myself), and I respect anyone's right to say they don't enjoy the prequels and why they feel that way (what is the point of a forum about films/movies if everyone just agreed about everything anyway?). ...but when I read people using the term 'rape' in relation to changes to films, or the even worse terms used about the prequels, well I have to be honest, my eyes glaze over and I feel less interested in what that person has to say, because if that is the level of unnecessary hyperbole their thought process is working on, it makes me question if it's worth my time reading it any further. |

I think I have the Dark_Jedi DVD-R conversions of the 1987 Japanese "Special Collection" LD release myself in some binder somewhere. Never could get used to the letterboxed picture being shifted significantly upwards to make room for the Japanese hardsubs, though.

If they kept it to crying, it wouldn't be a problem. The problem is the nonstop hostility and aggression. It's completely unjustifiable, and it does not come "equal from both sides", not by a long shot. Around here, it's always the same handful of people who have a sanction for talking to others with a totally unacceptable level of disrespect and antagonism, and it's all on that side. People on your side get suspended just for objecting to being attacked.

I'm starting a #StarWars marathon tonight. I haven't watched Ep. I in a while, and boy, after going thru 5.5 seasons of The Clone Wars and a season and a half of Rebels now, I can honestly say that Ep. I really does suck. The only redeeming quality of Episode I is the Darth Maul fight at the end. What totally kills this film is the 10-yr old Anakin played by Jake Lloyd. Totally miscast, and at the wrong age. Even the Jedi Council said, "this kid is too old for training." What Lucas should have done is to skip this part of the story, and go into his teenage years as an already recruited into the Jedi Apprenticeship program, with just flashbacks to his earlier childhood on Tatooine.
Before the excellent Clone Wars series, I had always thought that Ep I should have been the set-up for the Clone Wars with the the first two Acts of Ep. II, with the entirety of Ep. II being entirely about the Clone Wars, and the Ep. III being pretty much what it was. But because the Clone Wars was kind of skipped over in the films, it allowed us to have a great 100+ episode run of a ground breaking CG series that literally gave us more hours of Star Wars entertainment than all the 8 films (including the 2 Ewok movies) put together. And now we have the very promising Rebels series which I assume is replacing the once rumored "Dark Times" live-action series. And while I'm here, I'd like to weigh in on the UAOT and the SEOT. Personally, I don't think the altercations went far enough. I would have liked to have seen some of the original deleted scenes restored if at all possible, such as the Luke homestead scenes with Biggs in ANH, and some more Hoth Echo Base deleted scenes with the caged Wampas but with CG enhancements. But mainly I would have liked to have seen a thorough revamp of lightsaber and laser bolt effects in at least ANH and TESB. I think they had that problem fixed by ROTJ. The problem being that the laser bolts were just animated as red smears in ANH, and even into TESB. Prior to Rebels, it was thought that the OT lightsabers were consistent with the PT/Clone Wars style of blades, but maybe not so much anymore. But strengthening them would have been better, that's for sure. Also some of the special effects during the Battle of Yavin could have been changed too. The SEs added some new shots, but kept in most of the original shots of X-wings/Y-wings crashing into the Deathstar and they're just not consistent with the new scenes. Totally pulls you out of the whole scene. I know all of that is sacrilege to the hardcore fanboys, but so what...because here's what happened with the SEs across all 3 versions, (the '97, '04, and '11) is that they were all rushed for those specific release dates. And Lucasfilm didn't take the time to really complete the work. Because let's be honest...after 3 tries, there's still problems with the prints, from inconsistent lightsaber effects and color-timing differences. The grain levels in the BD transfers is also quite high to the point Tatooine looks like a sand storm. |

When I receive my LD Japanese "Special Collection" editions in the mail, I plan to use my video processor to shift the image down vertically to normalize the letterboxing.

There's also weird fanboys who can't handle the EU becoming "Legends" alternate continuity, going as far as to announce a spoiler "jihad" of the new movie if Disney doesn't re-canonize it. A fanbase the size of Star Wars is always going to have the crazies.
That has nothing to do with people criticizing the prequels or OT alterations though. And I rarely see people pull out the "rape" card on this website. The worst we get here is people who act obnoxiously condescending or passive aggressive, and that goes for both sides of the argument. |

George Lucas didn't rape anyone's childhood...he did ruin Star Wars, however.

I'm not sure if it was the first used to describe a movie, but there were fan protests when a remake of the original King Kong was announced: "Don't Rape the Ape!"
